More on the campgrounds, The one on Brownlee is called Woodhead campground, the one on Oxbow is called McCormick campground. It is the smallest.
The nicest one on Hells Canyon is called Copperhead. It is also the largest. My favorite is Hells Canyon Park. Just in case you wanted to look at them on Google earth or photobucket, or flickr or something. The road in from the Baker side is pretty good, the road in from the Idaho side is a little narrow in some spots, with a pretty good downhill grade right by the Brownlee dam.

We always stay in Copperfield-during the week if you get there before noon there are plenty of spots. True they are close together but the park is very well maintained and beautiful. There are old homesteads in the area, and fruits trees are everywhere. We picked plums, apples blackberries last year, made an apple pie in camp. Actually lots to do- we normally just leave the trailer in the campground and wander the area.

Thanks Rob
That is the type of towns we have always liked to explore!
We still talk about the day we spent exploring Idaho City and talking to all of the Jonny Rebs that still live there, and have great stories to share about their ancestors.
I also love small quaint Taverns............just like the feel? Beverages are usually cold and good too! :R
We need to talk about the 2017 Crawl you are going to assist in organizing???? ;)

Both times I have driven up Hells Canyon to the dam, it has been hotter than the hinges of hades! It was 112F (45C) in the mid-70s when I first visited, and it was 109F (42C) when I was there in August of '08 when I drove up there to shoot the dam.

Just sayin'

We made a check run this week to the dams- there is no outside water yet but the showers have hot water and there is power. We don't recommend the Oregon side Snake River road if you have a wide trailer- it is 38 miles of 1-lane windy gravel road on spooky cliff faces.

Thanks Loren
That is just the type of info we are looking for.
I think we would avoid 38 miles of narrow gravel roads.
I just got off the phone with Rob F, and he told me about the Summer heat and Summer crowds.
Off season may be the answer??
Would love to explore that corner of Oregon and Idaho! Possible Fall Crawl route for 2017???
We will talk at Shasta.

drove to that area back in 83 late into the night per some local's guidance of the 'party being "just up the road". We left Baker at about 10pm and drove and drove - everytime I asked how much farther, all I got was 'just a bit farther'. After we got to the party, miles past the bridge that went into Idaho way after midnite, I think figured out why one of the towns we went though was called Halfway, being it was about halfway to where we went. Beautiful setting on the river with the jet boats and the sun coming up !! And yes, I was up the whole time being everyone else sleep both ways. They got their payback - I had last filled up with gas in LaGrange, drove to Baker than up to Sumpter, back to Baker than all the way out there and back. We ran out of gas as we dropped back into Baker and they had to push the last, what seemed to be 4 or 5 blocks. The X-11 had a 14 gallon tank and it took a shade over 14 gallons to fill.

Lagrange?? don't know where this came from but I do remember now we filled up in Pendleton before climbing the hill to Le Grande. This is one fun hill on a bicycle as long as you are heading westbound as I was in 1983 heading home after my 3000++ mile ride across most of the states - I was unemployed and had nothing else to do. A month or so later I drove back to see a friend in Sumter/Baker which is when I got to see some of Hells Canyon on the late nite drive.
