Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

This is a blender drink that some may remember from years gone by:

Original recipe from Famous Ramos Orange Julius copied from the LA Times newspaper in the early 70’s (1972 I think)

½ 6 ounce can of Frozen Orange juice Concentrate
½ cup milk or half and half
½ cup water
¼ cup of sugar
¼ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
5 or 6 ice cubes

Put all ingredients in a blender and blend for about 30 seconds(until ice is broken up into small pieces)

If you would like to make an alcoholic version of this drink, double the recipe(it will still fit into the blender) and substituting equal amounts of alcohol( I have use vodka or light rum) for water. I suggest using no more that ¼ cup of alcohol (3/4 cup water, ¼ cup alcohol). Total volume of water and alcohol must equal 1 cup. CAUTION- be careful because of the sweetness this drink, it goes down easy and you may not be able to stand after drinking a few of these.

Notes:
I have also decreased the amount of sugar than what is called for in the recipe when I make it because I think it is too sweet when you use the amount in the recipe.

I'm not sure where they came up with this recipe, but I used to frequent one of the original stands in the '50s (in Covina, CA, now long gone) and I'm pretty sure that the original recipe included malt, like the stuff used to make malted milk shakes. It was definitely a powder and no real milk or half and half went into that blender. It could have been dairy creamer and powdered sugar (which is what Wikipedia says) but it sure tasted like malt. Oh, and they didn't add vanilla either.

Not coincidentally, my orange cat is named Julius.

Interesting because the stand I went to in the La Habra area (in front of the escalators)always used liquids and no powders(that I can remember). I think those were way better than the ones you get today. Anyways, this is a pretty tasty drink, you can add dry malt and give it a try - let me know

When was this? They might have changed the recipe. Since the original Orange Julius was started in LA in 1926 they may have begun with milk or cream. Powdered dairy creamer wasn't invented until 1961 so that can be ruled out as being part of the original recipe, though malt has been around since the 1870s.

All I remember is oj, ice and a big scoop of powder - again, this was in the '50s so it was definitely not powdered dairy creamer.

Mine was in the 70's (same time I got the recipe). It is amazing how things could have changed between decades. We both could be right????

I guess the only way to know for sure is to find one and ask - though I doubt they're the same as we remember since Dairy Queen bought them out. Thank God In'N'Out Burger hasn't changed! :thumbsup:

It's also possible they varied from stand to stand.

Yeah, In N' Out has a secret menu. I think Animal style has grilled onions or something.
