Building a Trailer Smoker

Recipes that work best for teardroppers

Postby mfkaplan » Sat Aug 11, 2007 11:38 am

I didn't mean to start something. I've never posted a link before. I think Ira's idea of using the Brinkman smokers is good. just imagine the surface of one smoker's cooking area multiplied by 4. Even if grouped, they're going to work. I don't know where they draw the air from, but the bottom, front, top and one sidewill be clear. I just wanted him to see the cute pig. I just thought it was unique. Smokers aren't that common in California. If I had had the money and it was legal, I would have hitched it behind the tear and pulled it home.

It worked for me just now. Maybe I hit it from the office at a bad time.

Went to Wal-Mart yesterday (no, didn't buy anything), and for those of you that have followed my small Brinkmann OVEN saga for the TD, they still have them there for 35 bucks.

I also saw a great charcoal smoker for home use, a really nice size with a bunch of cool featrures--a Royal Oak brand (same brand as the charcoal) for just $128.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... id=5508760

It has a large front fire feed door, a 3-piece rack which is really convenient for certain things, adjustable charcoal pan (easy to use handle to raise and lower), and huge side trays. Seems like they investigated all of the things people want in a grill/smoker, and included them.

Yeah, at $128, we're not talking the greatest materials, but I've always felt that if I get a year or two of good use out of them, I'm ahead of the game. (I grill or smoke at least 3 times a week.)

And you gotta see the SIZE of this one.

Put one of those on a trailer, you'll have better use. Use the rest of the 4X4 trailer base area for workspace, storage etc.

I just ripped the membrane off of 3 babybacks, and got 16 chicken thighs ready for a long and slow. Need to run up to the farm for the veggies. The corn is at it's sugar height, the beets are amazing, the baby potatoes melt when you bite into them. Might do some greens too.

Planning on dinner at 5PM or so. Can you make it to Central MA by then Ira? You're more than welcome.

Ira,

There's your firebox! Mount that low on the back of the trailer and then plumb out the smoke lines!

This is along the lines of what I'm thinking...

But others here are basically calling me an idiot for thinking in this direction.

I have no probem with being called an idiot for OTHER things, but as far as this goes, I think it would work.

Gobel is quite the card...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sab2Ltm1WcM

"Thus, Goble hit upon the idea of using - get ready - liquid oxygen. This is the form of oxygen used in rocket engines; it's 295 degrees below zero and 600 times as dense as regular oxygen. In terms of releasing energy, pouring liquid oxygen on charcoal is the equivalent of throwing a live squirrel into a room containing 500 Labrador retrievers. On Gobel's Web page (the address is http://ghg.ecn.purdue.edu/ NOTE: Link is now down), you can see actual photographs and a video of Goble using a bucket attached to a 10-foot-long wooden handle to dump 3 gallons of liquid oxygen (not sold in stores) onto a grill containing 60 pounds of charcoal and a lit cigarette for ignition."

I think it'd be fine Ira.

All you're doing with that box is creating smoke which is what you want.

You may want to leave the burners in the cabinets in order to maintain proper heat levels but other than that I think you've got the basic idea...

Hang that off the back, plumb the smoke to the cabinets and use the cabinet heat sources for temp control.

I think your original idea of the four separate smokers is a fine idea, I would just not join them all together, like you mentioned, so some air can circulate around them.

Also, if it were me, I would want each smoker to have a bit more capacity. I could see four of the square Smokey Mountains that I have now on a trailer.

Some of the other proposals are geting pretty complicated, and I'm not sure how they would perform. I do like that stacked barrel looking smoker, though.

And, you can't really be an idiot, you use a Mac, after all. ;)

I'm going to buy the trailer tomorrow at HF.

So if I don't post this weekend, it means my wife killed me.
