Homemade Gatorade

Recipes that work best for teardroppers

Homemade Gatorade

Postby mikeschn » Sun Jul 10, 2005 9:31 am

With the really hot weather we've been having this year I've been sucking down the Gatorade like crazy, at $3 a bottle. I was drinking myself poor. So this morning I went looking for a recipe for Gatorade, and tried this one. It's perfect...

Mike...

"You won't believe how close this sports drink recipe is to a commercial product. It has 110 mg of sodium and 38 mg of potassium per 8-oz. serving. Cost is only about 30 cents per half gallon. Compare that to $3 for Gatorade! You can adjust the sweetness to taste.

► 1 packet any flavor of unsweetened Kool-Aid or similar product for making 2 quarts
► 8 tablespoons sugar
► 3/8 teaspoon of salt
► 1/8 teaspoon salt substitute that contains potassium chloride
► 2 quarts of water"

Thanks for the tip Mike - I'll try that... I take a six-pack of 16oz frozen to work every morning. They're gone by 1PM and I buy another 1 or 2 at the marina. I also eat several protein bars during the day as supplements to b'fast and lunch. I may experiment with adding some protein powder to the mix. Keep cool ! Dave :D

Thanks from me too for the tip. I work in an open hangar at Scottsdale AZ Airport. It has been over 110 for the past week.

(Note: I never have had to shovel any heat off of the sidewalk!)

Remember, Its very important to keep your electrolyte level up. Drinking large quanitities of just water can lead to a fatal loss of sodium in your system!

I'm too lazy to procure and mix all that stuff...just buy the Gatorade in the powder form at the store and mix that with water. ;)

If you've got HEB in Bulverde or reasonably close there's a Mexican version of Kool-aid available there. Comes with some vitamins in it already. Mike's recipe should work with that; good thing about Mike's recipe: if you need to watch your sodium you can adjust it.

You can also swap out part (NOT all or you'll defeat the Gatorade purpose) of the sugar for Splenda, etc.

Too many ingredients? I didn't think so... But then again, I like to cook, and not everyone does...

Mike...

P.S. Give me a recipe with 50 ingredients and I'd probably pass on that too!!!

I happen to have all those ingredients, I think I'll try it out tomorrow while cutting the grass.

I buy this for my Employees. Only $1.87 a gallon. The powder is even cheaper.

Mike,

Didn't say there were too many ingredients, I said "I'm too lazy to procure and mix all that stuff". :D ;)

Yep, you're right. When you wrote "all that stuff" I thought you meant too many ingredients... my mistake!

You can make it with the salts and Sugar-Free Koolaid to cut down on ingredients.

I like it -- made mine half strawberry, half lime. It tastes way better than it looks.
