Hush Puppies

2 cups corn meal
4 tsp sugar...can use more if you like
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
(optional) 1/4 to 1/2 cup of flour I used 1/4
1 cup milk
1/2 onion finely chopped
(optional) beer (if using beer decrease amount of milk (1/2 cup milk,
1/2 cup beer or 1/4 cup milk and 3/4 beer etc) (you can decrease the sugar or not if you use beer. I did not. I actually added about a teaspoon more, as I remember them having a sweet taste.
Mix batter and drop teaspoons full of mix in to hot oil. I would drop only 1 tsp of mix first to test. Use butter flavor oil or shorting. I used butter flavor Crisco shorting. Done when both sides are golden brown.
