Picture a 50 horse 3 phase Electric motor that you have just rewond and are putting back together your left hand is holding the end bell in place and in your right hand you have a 5 lb dead blow hammer can you guss what happend next?

frying in DO

At a campfire, can you use the Dutch Oven with oil in it and get it hot enough to deep fry something, like this?

I haven't done any DO cooking but enjoyed some at the MO KAN campout and ready to try some myself!

Sure..................my grandmother used to deep fry in a dutch oven.

Absolutely. On our Dutch Oven Campout in August at Farragut State Park, one of the guys made sourdough donuts, then deep-fried them in a 14 inch dutch oven. Yum, yum!

The oil temp must be 375 to 400 degrees to deep fry the donuts. This means a lot of coals under the oven, and a wind screen around it. Use a thermometer to monitor the oil temp.

My wind screen is 5 or 6 of my old license plates, wired together. They fold up easily when not in use, and make either a wind break for the dutch oven, or a hot plate after the food is done.

I made a wind screen out of old licence plates after seeing yours in Nebraska. It works great!! :thumbsup: :applause:

I understand this is an old post, but read what everyone wrote on the mandaline. and well the tears are still straming down my face from laughing. :cry: :lol:

Oh yea, I have one of those and learned a really big lesson.
ALWAYS ALWAYS USE THE SAFETY PLUG, almost cut off my finger with it.
Watched the tip of of index fly off. And yes, it hurt for several weeks after. My ego was mush worse for the wear, and now when I reflect, it is a memory where I learned a lesson. However a certain body part wont be following me to the grave. ( finger tip of index ) and of course dinner was thrown away from the blood.
But it did my heart good to see Im not alone in the dumb person award dept. :applause:

By the way, excellent recipe on the blooming onioons. Thank you, Ill be useing that tonight to try it out.

I was using one of these things once and cut the end off my finger. Mine was bad enough that it took about 3 months to heal enough that I could put my hand in my pocket without pain!!! :cry: :oops:

I now have two mandolins. The original, which I purchase at least fifteen years ago, is in my dutch oven equipment box. The new one, which is a V-style mandolin, is the one I use daily.

Both of these still have the 'safety plug' and I use them. I learned my lesson long ago, after slicing off the tip of my finger in a car door. I am much more careful of appendages nowadays. :)
