Cherry Chocolate Surprise Cake

From Byron's Dutch Oven Recipes

1 chocolate cake mix; prepared as directed
1 (20 oz.) can cherry pie filling
1 (8 oz.) brick cream cheese
1 egg
3 Tbs. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Pour prepared cake batter into a greased 12" dutch oven. Spoon cherry pie filling into clumps over the cake batter.

In a small mixing bowl, cream together the cream cheese, egg, sugar and vanilla, until the mixture is smooth. Drop by the tablespoon over the top of the cake.

Bake using 8-10 briquettes on the bottom and 14-16 briquettes on the top for 1 hour or until the top center of the cake springs back when touched.

Serve warm with whip cream as a topping.

Since I don't eat desserts anymore, I'm not sure how this tastes. When I made it last month for a dutch oven demo in Rathdrum, Idaho, it only lasted about 10 minutes. So I guess people really liked it.

Sounds good......need a dutch oven. This could make camping in eastern Wa fun.

I need to put a dutch oven on the christmas list.

That sounds great! Don't have a dutch oven yet but may ask my wife to try and make it in the oven. She has a recipe for a similar cake and could probably use the same time/temp settings.
After we try it, I'll post the results and also put her recipe for "Dump Cake" up here...

I did it for the Rathdrum demo in a 10" DO. It didn't come out as well as it should. It needs to cook longer and the center never really gets firm, as the cake is taller in a 10".
