It depends on the controller. My Renogy has a max voltage of 27. It should be in your products specs.

Most units require reading the target bank at boot up, and that determines their output voltage automatically.

The V input range allowed, and optimal V range for efficiency varies.

My Bogart SC2030 charge controller automatically reads and accepts so called “12 volt” vs. “24 volt” panels (maximum 30 amps); however, a switch must manually be set for 12 volt vs. 24 volt battery systems and another switch must manually be set for AGM vs. flooded batteries.

Well, after much much searching I found the answer. My EPEVER 80 amp Mppt Solar Charge Controller can take 12v/24v/36v/48v and puts out the correct
voltage for a 12v battery bank.

That being a PWM system, does it have the buck / boost conversion capability to allow 24V panels (Voc ~40) feeding a 12V bank, or 12V panels (Voc ~20) feeding a 24V bank?
