What about camping dishes?

Postby fornesto » Tue Dec 07, 2004 4:28 pm

Since I'm doing most of the building, my wife has asked to be in charge of decorating the interior and stocking the galley. She's looking for vintagey type dishes that aren't breakable with a 1940s/50s look to them. I'm thinking enamelware or melmac.

Does anybody have anything special for dishes/pots/pans etc.?

I have the enamelware, black with white specks in them. They were my fathers from the 40’s/50’s. But I found a brand of paper plates that fit in them. That way you don’t have to wash them until you get home, before the next camp out! I have seen them in blue and red.
They do look cool! 8) But they do chip if banged about.

Paper products are great, but I hate having to drag a bag of trash to town everyday. Plus, its just one more thing to run out of. Coffee just does not tast the same in a paper cup.

We camp really simple... 2 plates, 2 bowls and 2 of just about everything else. I wash the dishes in about 10 minutes..... We have melmac with a floral design.... But, that was replaced with some rubber maid plain white stuff... If I can find the melmac, I'll bring it along .... it may be at the VT house..

Speaking of rubber maid, boy, the crap really hit the fan with them when they would not negotiate with walmart... Big W stopped buying from them and rubbermaid is now almost non-existent.... Don't mess with the big dogs..

I use both - enamelware (white with blue trim) for the teardrop, and turquoise Melmac for the Scotty. FWIW, the Ford/Edison/Firestone/Burroughs camping group used white enamelware. But they had servants to do the washup... 8)

Gage has the best system. He puts his silverware in his shirt pocket and coffee cup in hand. Then walks around the camp ground till someone feels sorry for him and invites him for a cup of coffee or a snack. Makes clean up real easy.

Please tell me that aint so.
His galley is to die for.
It'd be a shame not to use it.
Well... If it's true, he's as smart as a fox.
