Roof Goof

Postby ALAN GEDDES » Tue May 04, 2004 6:10 pm

 Tried putting on first sheet of ply on roof by myself. Going to have to rip it off and redo it. Going to lose a day just cleaning up the mess. :D Picked up all my trailer steel, ready cut and all I have to do is weld. Cost an extra $20 to have it all cut. Worth it to me. AL G

So what happened? I went looking for your personal gallery, but I couldn't find one. Then I went to the links, but you didn't have a link there either. Finally I looked at the Memberlist, but you don't have a web page listed there either. So I struck out.

So I guess you're going to have to tell me where your pictures are, and what happened that the roof got all messed up.

Alan,

Something/somebody needed to slow you down! You were making the rest of us builders look pathetic in comparison to your speedy work! Just kidding of course...sorry for your slow down. It's generally worth it to do something over if needed though. Especially for something major that would bug you forever. I'm leaving a some of my minor mistakes in. I'll just call them "design features" though.

Overbent my full sheet of 1/4 inch for the front and roof. Started fastening down and realized I didn't have any way of getting it to pull down to the sides. Area is too high up on cabin to get any weight on and strap was not working either. By this time the construction adhesive was setting up. Oh well. Rip it off and try again. Mistake was in not wetting ply and forming over framework as I did on first Tear. I don't have a digital camera but will I will try and get photos. I'll pick up a disposable today. AL

Talk about mistakes! I actually call them "design points" or "personality" traits. And heaven help anyone who actually points them out and questions them! :P

By the way, I opted to use 2 sheets of 1/8th inch lauan, individually glued and screwed, to mitigate the curve issue. I had no problems with this. Perhaps it is beginners luck.

Good luck.

Can't find 1/8th around town. Got it off OK. Just have to clean up the glue and redo. AL

Alan, excuse my ignorence, but if you wet the wood to bend it, won't that interfer with the glue sticking to it?

So why are you glueing your aluminum down? Because metal and wood expand and contract at different rates as they get hot and cold, I thought it made more sense for the metal to float over the wood held inplace by the trim along the edges.

Jim; Wet the wood on inner side and let DRY to maintain curve. Then glue. AL G
