New Cabin Car Photos and Information!

Postby Nick Taylor » Sat Jan 15, 2005 4:10 pm

I've been talking to a fine gentleman who owns and restored a 1947 Cabin Car. He's been great about sharing pictures of his trailer and the history he knows of them. He bought his trailer from an employee of the company that originally built them.

He was happy to let me post his pictures and info on my site so I updated my Cabin Car page. His trailer is in storage for winter right now but tells me he will take additional photos when he gets it out for the season.

Here is the address of the page: http://www.nicksteardrop.com/cabincar.htm

Enjoy!

Nick.

Great photos Nick. He's done one heck of a job. Do you know if he is going to try and make Minden in June or one of the California gatherings? Sure would be nice to see it up close.

Have a good day,
Gage

Any Idea?

Postby Guy » Sun Jan 16, 2005 8:07 pm

Dear Nick,

In the shot looking at the sink with the table up there is a circular "something" on the raised portion of the floor. Any idea what that is?
Regards,

Guy

Guy,

I asked about the area under the sink. It seems that that raised portion of the floor is usually dead space in the cabin car and prone to moisture problems. The thing you're seeing under the sink is a cover that can be removed to allow that area to vent and he also stores small items in there. He's planning on making wood covers for the holes.

You find some great units, Nick. Folks here on the coast who own woody station wagons tell me that they look for homes being tented for termites and ask to park in the garage during the process. Wonder if this guy does the same with his "cabin car".

I am also somewhat of a railroad fan. I have been told that "Cabin Car" was the East Coast term for a caboose, especially on the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Tom,

I've heard of tenting woodies as well. A friend of mine used to restore pianos and they would have to tent them sometimes if they were infested.

I don't know if Art or anyone else has had problems with termites in their trailers. It would certainly be more a problem for a woody type than a fully aluminum covered one.

And yes, "cabin car" is another name for cabooses. Makes it hard to search for information on trailers in google when you get a ton of hits for railroad stuff.

Since your name is "San Diegan" can I assume you're in San Diego? I am as well.

So in the back inside of the cabin where I thought there might be a small counter of some kind, there is only closet space? What a letdown... But the guy did a wonderful job restoring it!!! :)

Iv'e just joined and enjoyed reading the comments about my Cabin Car. It ended up being more work than I planned, but, don't projects usually go that way. We have no problems with termites in this country (I live 100 miles north of Toronto Ontario in Torrance). I know of 6 Cabin Cars that still exist.
