Tongue Box Installed

Postby beverlyt » Sun Feb 06, 2005 4:27 pm

We finally got around to installing the toolbox on the tongue of the cubby to act as a tongue box.

We didn't want to drill any holes into the tongue, so we brought the box forward more then we would have liked. (The toolbox is too narrow to sit on it's own further back) We also needed to bring it forward quite a bit to keep the lid from hitting the front of the tear. Attached it with U-bolts and locktite nuts.

I think it still looks good, even though it's a bit more forward than you wanted. Good choice with the diamond plate aluminum!!! :D

Northern Tool has a couple that are angled to fit the tongue. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/ ... 91&R=19291

SteveH,
I love the large "true" tongue boxes...!

But... instead of paying $200.00, I paid 45 bucks.
And the weight is feather light.

Bev,

I hear ya on the $200...I plan on building mine. I just want it carry things like an awning, jack stands, a hose, extention cord, barbeque pit, charcoal, charcoal starter, a port-a-potty, and maybe some folding chairs. Hmmm, wonder how big that box needs to be?

SteveH,
That's pretty much what I wanted mine for.... pretty much things I don't use all the time, but enough NOT to carry them in the footwell. The footwell is for things I hardly EVER need, such as wheel chalks, duct tape, etc... My mattress fit real snug.. I have to lift the mattress, hold it up with the top of my head.... get the footwell door open, grab what I need, get the lid back down flat, (which usually doesn't happen first try!) and re-adjust the sheets. Sort of a pain in the &$# if you ask me.

I needed something rather small since my tongue weight is already at 95 pounds and didn't want to stray much over that.

When we were looking we considered something like that. The problem is they make it difficult to put in such items as camp chairs. The rectangular ones work well, but you do have to be a bit careful about jack knifing. So far so good!

Steve, seems to me you need to build a box as big as a car..call it a boxcar...

Bev,

I sort of figured that is the way the footwell would work, so I didn't put one in my tear. Seems like one of those things that works better on paper than in real life.

Jim,

What, you think the box will be to big? Imagine!

When a person starts thinking about everything he wants to take, and where to put it, something has to give. I believe most of that stuff will end up in the back of my Dodge pickup. ;)

Looks good Bev. The problem with storage boxes is that there are almost to many choices. Good thinking on the u-bolt mounting method.

Charlie,
I can't take credit for the u-bolts idea, though I'm sure glad Asianflava did!

You could use U-bolts to connect the box to the tongue.

His idea worked great!

another idea or 2

Postby waywardson » Sun Feb 06, 2005 10:26 pm

hello, what about covering the entire top of your toung area with 1/2" treated plywood or possibly metal? by doing that, you could shift the box back, (sounds like that what you originally wanted) if there is a problem with the toolbox lid hitting the front of your trailer could that be solved by installing a couple of chains to limit the travel? the u bolts look like they could be easily cut and the box removed, have you considered welding them to trailer frame? just some suggestions, for what theyre worth,

George,
We considered something like that.

In the end we just decided to "thow" it on the easiest and quickest way.

We may change it out a little sometime down the road.

Tnx,
Bev

Bev,

so I didn't put one in my tear.

Jim,

I am in the process of building and built one on my chassis  too much work for the added benefit which now appears to be quite minimal. I wouldn't spend the time on another one.
