bigger wheels

Postby brickz » Mon Feb 07, 2005 8:03 am

I started my TD with a surplus boat trailer with small wheels and want to go with bigger ones. unfortunately, the inside wall of the tire is dead even with outer skin of TD. a bigger size would create problems. has anyone seen hub extension plates that would move the wheels out a scooch or maybe rims that are off center to move the tire out? have a 4 1/2 x 5 pattern. Thanks for any suggestions.

Iyt has been my experience that most trailers axles can be cut and made wider or narrower quite easily. Look at yours and it might be the answer.

Billet aluminum wheel adaptors/spacers are available. Check with a local tire store...Discount Tire, PepBoys might have them. Ebay under wheel adaptors or wheel spacers will turn some up. You want 4.5 to 4.5 (spacers) 1.25" thick, which I think is the minimum thickness. I run a pair on my Mullins Redcap repop trailer with no problems at all.

If your studs are long enough you could try a 1/4" spacer ring available at most speed shops and places like Summit Racing online.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks guys, I'll look into both. Charlie, that's exactly what I was imagining. figured there was probably something out there. Didn't think of modifying the axle though. Thanks again for info.

Before you cut and widen an axle w/ leaf set up, look into a new rubber torsion axle. It might save you money.
