Restoring builders plates

Postby Kevin A » Sun Feb 13, 2005 8:29 pm

Here's a link to a photo of the brass builder's plate off my 1937 Thims Teardrop. http://www.tnttt.com/gallery/image.php?image_id=960
Does anyone have any proven methods for cleaning the corrosion of of it?
It's a neat little brass tag 1" x2" actual size.
Also would welcome any information anyone might have about the Thim's trailer company, I've done some searching for info but haven't had any luck yet.

Not sure if this will help but to clean brass ornaments I've used a mixture of lemon juice and salt.

How big is it?

You want a saucer, some plain baking soda, and a little water.

Spread 1/4 cup of soda in a saucer. Get 1/3 cup or so of water in another vessel.

Put a drop or two of water on the tag, sprinkle on a tablespoon of soda, and rub gently with your fingertips. Be persistent. Be patient. When it reaches the level of clean you want, dry it carefully with a soft cloth.

No toxins, no fizzies, no problems.

Thanks everyone for all the tips  I had initially used a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. That method did remove most of the green and produced the results seen in the before photo. Since my first post on this subject I tried the brasso and carefully scraped some of the corrosion off. That did greatly improve the appearance, however, after switching to toothpaste it seems the mild abrasive in the toothpaste has proven to be the most effective method. Now all I have to do is keep polishing it until I'm satisfied with the results.
Thanks again everyone for all the help. :D Here is the link to the before and after pics.

I like the after, I wouldn't take it any further than that. Gives it good aged look, after all it is an antique.
