Leaving it at the campsite?

Postby Lefty Lucy » Mon May 31, 2004 9:46 am

Any ideas on securing a teardrop at the campsite and being sure it is there when you return. I can see chaining it to a tree but what other ways do you know of?

other than a Dobermine with an attachment to the teardrop this lock is about as good as it gets,,,if a thief cuts it off then they were gonna get it anyway,,course its gonna add about 5 lbs to ya trailer weight,,,got one on boat and one on tear even though its not finished,,its a pretty hard nut to crack,,,,

Seems to me that some people have a "removable" tongue portion that comes off and you can throw in your trunk?
They also make locks that fit I think?

I use a tongue lock, plus I use my padlock for the tongue latch to lock the safety chains together... after all someone could just hook up the chains and tow it away (yikes!). Then again if they REALLy want it they have other avenues...

Actually I should still have the tongue latch locked some to think of it. Thus you need 2 padlocks and a tongue lock for max security!

Is there a market for stolen tears? :P

Well having a $20,000 teardrop, I put a LoJack system on mine. I'm also a firm believer that what ever happens, happens for a reason. If someone wants it they are going to get it. I sure don't want them to do any damage while taking it. I'll (the police) will retrive it later.

Have a good day,
Gage

"Hi Tech or what!"

Dave, funny you say that. When I was up at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park earlier this month displaying the Scotsman with 10 others, the Scotsman Tear HB became know as the ' Hi Tech Teardrop '. And to think that I only built it for total comfort no mater where I went or if there would be hook-ups or not. It is so easy to just hook up and go anywhere and just relax away from the rat race. I have mountains and desert camping just an hour away and no people and about the same amount of time to several camp grounds it the Angeles National forest where there are people. I have found that when you go into a campground, you better get set up in a hurry because withing 15 minutes or so the whole camp ground is going to be there wanting to see it and know all about it.

Have a good day,

I'm thinking about the OnStar system for my teardrop. They can trace that just about anywhere! :2gunfire:

Then again, with such a unique teardrop, maybe I could just put out an APB on all the teardrop websites! :hiding:

Currently all I use is the little Master Locking pin... oh, I also have the tongue lock that Dave has... see picture up there!!!

Gage why do they call your tear the Hi Tech Teardrop? Is it yours that has the built in tv/dvd/boombox etc?

We purchased a portable DVD/CD player and have use it in ours. Just need to add a shelf so its easily installed/removed. With our new galley concept I plan on space for stereo speakers for some nice 'dinner music ah la Tear style'.

Oh I was going to ask you about your Chevy pickup fenders... I have a similar pair of fiberglass fenders to add to our Hunter. How are your attached to your Tear? Bolted from the inner flange? Any info would be useful. I will probably need to cut a plywood spacer because of the 15" wheels.

About all the campsite visitors. We make up some nice brochures to hand out to the curious. I love telling people "Oh this is the mid size unit. There is a smaller one if you prefer" (Ours is a 4x10).

Just revisited your site Gage. Yup I recognize all your Hi Tech gear. I must say I love the shape of your tear. Great shots of yours parents Ken Skill too!

Do you have any closeups of your elaborate galley setup?

Is this what your looking for Dave. I've also included a pic of the intertainment area. Oh, and by the way. The two small drawers above the counter pull out 18 inches but are only 8 inches deep in the galley area. And under the chop board is a large RV sink. With the unit pulled out, I have 2 square feet of usable counter top not including the sink area.

Hey Gage,

What kind of a fridge is that? Is that a 3 way that you pulled out of the old canned ham?

Nope, just an ice box but it did come out of the 'Canned ham' that I took apart. Before I built the box that it fits in, I went down to Camping World and measured several fridge's and a later upgrade will be to replace the ice box with a fridge and vent it out the side. Even though it will most likely be a three way, I'm only going to use it on elec. (110 or 12v). That most likely won't happen for a few years down stream.

Have a good day,

So Gage...

Does that LCD swivel 180 degrees? Can't tell if thats it showing in the back of the galley. And whats with 2 remotes! LOL. Yup ya gots it all in there!

I was inspired.. I revised my latest concept (to be built in a few weeks) to include 'galley dinner music' in the rear. Will use a car stereo unit (located in upper cupboard on the right)... will 200W do?? Haven't figured out where to put the sub woofer though.. uugh...
