Anyone else go camping on Mem. Day?

Postby doug hodder » Tue May 29, 2012 9:53 am

I did a quick trip up the hill from my house to a nearby campground. The elevation is 5500'. A couple of days in mid 30's and some rain and snow, made me glad I took my standie. A Coleman 220 really heats up a trailer and burns much cleaner heatwise than a single mantled lamp. We finally got some decent weather on Sunday. Did anyone else go this last weekend...and if so, post your pics! Doug

I was up in the Yreka area last weekend and the weather was beatuiful. Took my 72 Red Dale up for my daughter and we met in Yreka. She took it back to Oregon and I headed home after 1 night. Glad I missed the rain :)

yes, our usual trip, as it's also our wedding anniversary weekend too, we went to Fostoria, Ohio to watch trains. :D :vroom:

It was also our first trip in our brand new cargo trailer conversion. great weather, a little on the hot side, but always a breeze, and thank God for the awning I ordered installed on the side of the trailer. The camper worked out great. Some tweaking to do of course. I worked til midnight the day before we left and then up early to finish the trailer enough to use. Left out here about 10am, not 6 like we usually like, oh well. I was pooped before we got there as I worked for 2 weeks on the trailer. :worship: :SH

The plan was to take pictures of the camper finished and in-use, but I took like 2 pixs and the darn thing crapped out, so I'll have to take some pixs here with another camera and post them. The Honda 2000 generator ran the hot water heater, air conditioner, electric skillet (not together) and charger just fine. The Optimum battery ran the water pump and lights great. All the electrics and plumbing, shower, toilet, etc worked fine, except i had a water leak on one fitting that gave me a problem, (that's why I worked til midnight before we left) however replaced the fitting and it worked. Even my homemade dump tank I converted from a water tank worked. 8)

Then the bad news, we packed up in the morning of our 3rd day to head home, and as we were leaving to go to Bob Evans for breakfast, I ran over something and got a puncture on my left rear tire to my car. :x

Anyway, long story short, thanks to Wal-mart for a repair for only $10, and all is well again. :ok:

Hope everyone had a nice weekend too. :Flippin Burger:

We camped near a large COE lake. One of our daughters, a college sr., came too. Hot temps in the upper 90s, but we kept cool in the lake. We were gifted with a nice breeze most days. All five campgrounds were full.

Although, this is odd, our neighbor across the street booked his highly coveted lakefront site in December, but he didn't stay the weekend. The first night he told DH, "We only live 6 miles from here and are going home tonight." The next day they "visited" their site twice, but only for about an hour and stayed in the trailer. Sunday, he came to the site once but didn't even unlock the camper door. He talked with us and left. They did have a boat and used it some.

Not me.

I'm going for a 4 day next week. Got the extra day because I worked Monday.

Holiday weekends are like Amateur night at the Roxburry.

The rangers are out in force, Newbey's makin noise all night, and screamin about every noise they hear. Everything's a Bear...or a Cougar/ Mountain Lion.

And just to make it more real they DO leave food out to attract em.

I did go fishing Sunday Morning. Only caught 1.

A great BBQ Monday.

Happy Trails

For us Len...any camping newbies folded up their tents and left with the weather. The campground really emptied out. I did have 1 guy that was pretty insistent that we were in his reserved spot...till I pointed out that while he had the right campsite #....he was in the completely wrong campground. I wonder how his weekend went? His wife didn't appear to be too thrilled with the idea of camping, and his 3 little girls were all in shorts when they arrived and they were reserved at a site about 500' higher than where we were. The bigger RV types hung in. Doug

Anyone else go camping on Mem. Day?

Postby nevadatear » Tue May 29, 2012 6:21 pm

Had everything ready but backed out when it wasn't supposed to be nice until Sunday. We we planning on a Truckee trip (not our choice) and 40s didn't sound nice (mostly I was sick). Went "camping" at the reno house instead. Grandchildren slumber party, working on the yard and buying new stabilizer for the tear that broke at the dam. Should be al ready for irg.

Slow walked out of the house on friday moring and about froze to death. wind was howling and the sky was overcast. I said just another attempt to rain.

by 9 it was pouring down and the drought in wyoming was over for a day and a part of saturday.

I hit the shop turned on the space heator and burnt some kersone up.

it froze friday night. thank God I did not plant my corn yet here in wyoming.

by sunday we had over a inch of rain. and acutally mud on the ground.
monday it was blowing us off the planet so there was no use trying out a dutch owen in wind blowing of a foot of snow in our moutains. and I just headed back out to the shop.

today I am in the feild and been roller harrowing most the day enjoying sunshine and 70 degrea weather.

I do feel a tiny wheeny bit for the guys that went up in the moutains camping last weekend and got dumped on with fresh powder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I amit in wyoming I normaly wait till after memorial day to camp.

I kinda am partial to camping in dry hot weather.

all I got to say is my memorial day weekend was REAL cheap on the gas bill.

I only drove less than a mile into to pavillion on sunday for church. in 3 days the only real trip I made was on a tractor like 6 miles down the road to barrow my buddys roller harrow.

and idleing at high gear was real cheap on desil.

it was so pleasont to only drive a tractor all weekend.

my dad on the other hand got our monthly fuel bill when the gas man showed up with a delivery last thursday. 300 gallons of gas and 150 of clear number 2 desile. My dad got hit with a bill of over 1500 dollars for gas and desile.

I guess I am going to have to raise my price on sweet corn for the desile I am using out of his tank.

other than all the other incesses in farming input cost this year. fuel on a farm and ranch operation is one of the biggest things trying to put you out of bussness.

I do though hate to charge more for my corn. theres old people in pavillion that can't afford to pay 4 bucks for a dozen ears of corn.

but then the desil to plant the corn is quiet a bit more at 4.19 a gallon this year.

I spent the long weekend with some friends in central Iowa. One of the guys has acreage on a river. No facilities, but when we need to we drive a couple miles over to the State Park. Friday night rained buckets with hail. I was sure from the sound of the hail the new trailer would be damaged. But when I got up in the morning no dents. Just found my new shelter twisted onto the ground. This was just it's 4th trip. We think it filled up with rain and collapsed. I have had a bad run of luck with the shelters lately.
The rest of the weekend was great though. Good weather and great food and conversation. Life is good!

I went up into the Angelas nat'l forest, great time, Friday night it was 25degrees.
The sad part was that right next to where i was camoing is a group site I've used many times, in fact had my 50th there.Walking threw it i discovered the NFS came into the site andclear cut it, every scrub oak and manzanita was choped to the ground. the site is one large mulch field. they wiped out about 10 acres. I'm so pissed. and the capper is their still renting out and they doubled the price. I asked a ranger why
they had destroyed a beautiful campsite and he said, " I don't know"

Woodbutcher,
If rain or wind is in the forecast, we remove the cover of the canopy and leave the frame. We've witnessed too many of our neighbors' canopies buckle under the weight of the water, or take flight in the wind.

I too did the Columbia Gorge Gathering at Stevenson Washington & had a great time, like last year.
Four of us drove over the Bridge Of The Gods to Multnomah Falls, Oregon and did the 6.2 mile loop hike.
Image
There's several beautiful waterfalls on the hike and one that stands out is Fairy Falls shown in the picture below.
Jane and I did this same hike last summer and also did Bridal Veil Falls and the numerous falls along the historic highway 30.
This is one beautiful area, not to be missed in ones lifetime.

Image
The next day 6 of us hiked to the top of Beacon Rock (850 feet) on the Washington side. :D Danny
