Can someone tell me why there is no interest in a 5' high

Postby mikeschn » Wed Dec 11, 2013 4:44 pm

Rather than drift off topic in the poll thread, I thought I'd ask here.

Can someone tell me why there is no interest in a 5' high TTT, like the Midget, Tidget & Widget?

Mike,
I built a 5x8 Benroy using your plans. Finished it about a year ago. My wife and I are recently retired. We took the
tear ("Wild Thing") to AZ last winter and enjoyed some outings with the AZ folks. We plan to take it south again this
winter and probably spend more time in it than last year. I would love to do a 5 high as a 2nd project. A bit more room
will be good as we age. We really appreciate your site and efforts. :applause: Thanks.

why there is no interest in a 5' high TTT

Speaking for my wife and I, because we are over 5 ft tall. If we can't stand erect we may as well crawl. But we don't want to crawl either. So we want 6'2" minimum.

A 5x8 trailer with a bunch of 5x10 sheets are sitting in a barn in Maine waiting for mid winter to start turning into a 5' high teardrop. I wanted the extra foot of height so the bed could be raised and the gap between bed and floor used for storage.

Just sayin'

Our very first TD was built 5’ high inside ... It was Nice , we could even sit upright in a folding chair with our hat on ... Not claustrophobic at all .. and it fit in the garage ... can’t do that now with my standy' Submarine... (the FS)

Storage may be the reason for most. I know I would like to make a 5' tall 6' wide but it would not fit in the garage that I keep my current one in.

Mike,
I love my 5' tall trailer. But as someone mentioned earlier, I could only get it in the garage at the old house with the nose wheel cranked all the way down. We had a one piece door that pivoted outwards. Here in Utah all you see is roll up type garage doors, so I have at least another foot clearance now.

My reasons for no 5' high

1.) Probably wont fit in the garage/carport
2.) Can't stand up in it, so rather just go higher and make a full standie
3.) Weighs more and more weight to pull around
4.) Sticks up above tow vehicle and pushes more wind
5.) Looses the streamlined teardrop shape and looks more like a pumpkin, odd shape
6.) Forces you to join more plywood sheets together
7:) Costs more as more materials are needed

Just a few that I can think of.

my current project..... 5' high inside. 6'4 total weight so fit in any garage and not much taller than most tow vehicle.... hoping for around 1000lbs with lightweight aluminum construction. it s A 4 place tiny not so tiny trailer....

Image

my reason for building this 5 feet high.
-should be easier to tow than a full height trailer
-you can walk in it head down to move from one side to the other. But really, why would you stand in a trailer??? i m either outside playing/cooking, relaxing...or inside...Seated, or laying down

time will tell if my little family like it! should be done in 2 months!

 What Dan said, above. I thought about it....and decided to forget it, at least for now....

PS. Mine is 4'6.5" when closed, plus another 3" for the vent; so, 4'9.5". That leaves less than 1" clearance under the open garage door, when entering/exiting.
The garage door is a standard size.

Welcome to Chuck and Carol.

If I ever build again he he he, yea I been bit, I would like to build a 5x 9 and 5'5" tall Foamie. Why that tall? I am 5'3" I would build one sorta like GPW's Foamstream.

I'm with you on that, Mary. But, I would also have to change the side gate and add a driveway to allow for something like that because it would have to be kept outside if it was that tall. Also, if it was going to be kept outside, I think I would go with a hybrid foamie gypsy caravan.

Well for me ,its not tall enough to stand (upright) in.... And who need extra height when you are sleeping (horizontal)...
If I were going 5 high, I would just go with a Casita or a Burro or one of the many versions of the fiberglass modules...

:) I spent most of the month of October making more concrete driveway along the side of our house in anticipation of the start of out CT project. 12,000+ pounds of sand and gravel mix plus portland cement; first from trailer to mixer and then mixer to the ground forming. Along with that I removed the old wooden gates and welded up steel tubing frames for new gates we paneled with metal roofing like on our home. Those were mounted to new steel posts that extend 5 feet into the ground. Included in the details was an electrical outlet on the house sidewall so I can plug 'er in without running long extension cords and a new frost free water hydrant to make washing and filling water tanks easier.

All so we can have the headroom we wanted.

No interest here because it's neither fish nor fowl. It's too tall to have many of the advantaged of a teardrop while being not tall enough to stand and shower in.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!
