Spotted at a friend's hot rod shop...

Postby Patrickteardrop » Wed Feb 05, 2014 8:36 pm

I saw this beauty at a friend's hot rod shop this morning. He has his annual open house this time each year, and I spotted this little beauty in his parking lot. I didn't get a chance to ask him if it was his or a customer's trailer, though. It is a Sierra, built by G & H Cabinet Company of Van Nuys, California. I estimate the year to be 1948 - 1952, but do not know definitively. It's quite the nice little camper! See for yourself below! Enjoy!

...and, yes, I fully intend to see if this honey is for sale!

The manufacturer still exists with the same name in Van Nuys, too!

So, is this a standy, a slouchy, or what? I don't get a real sense of proportion from the exterior pics you included. I will say, it does look neat.

From the ground to the top of the roof, it's right at 6' tall. It's a "slouchy", for lack of a better term...unless you are 4' 9", then it's a "standy". Very cool unit!

I'm in Tulsa and would like a good look at this trailer. Would you mine sharing where it is? Kinda searching for new build ideas and this has promise :) Ron
ps got several hot rods - might know the shop?

I talked to Jerry, the owner of the hotrod shop and the trailer both. This is a 1954 trailer. He is building it to go along with his 1954 Kaiser Manhattan sedan. He is modifying the Kaiser with a 6.0L LS GM engine and transmission, so he and his wife can do some long-distance touring with the car and trailer.

Is there any way you could re-post the pictures of this Sierra trailer?

My dad had a 1960 Sierra that we've re-built, and when my daughter gets back from camping in Southern Utah with it, I'll post some pics.

Thanks.

Tom,

I am looking forward to your post of the 1960 Sierra pics, I am in the process of a total rebuild on a 1956 Sierra. I tried to PM Patrick a couple of times to see if he still had the picks of the 1954 but no response. I would like to see those too!
