Out west trip

Postby Mary C » Tue May 30, 2017 11:03 pm

After talking about it I am now in California. I am so excited. I'm still looking for someone who can let me driveway camp while I visit San Francisco . I have some beautiful memories of seeing some beautiful parks. Let me know if you are near any parks. Thanks

Mary, it is doubtful that you can find a driveway to camp in, in San Francisco. Space is so precious there that most people there don't even have driveways for themselves. Add to that, many of the streets are narrow and hilly.

Driving in San Francisco can be a nightmare. It is listed as one of the 10 worst places to tow a trailer in the USA. Add to that, vehicle combinations with more than two axles are now charged a bridge toll of $25 to go across each one that has a toll. That can add up fast!

I would suggest that you find a spot outside of San Francisco where you can leave the trailer and either drive in or take the Bart (Bay Area Rapid Transit) system or some combination of that. If you don't find somebody outside of San Francisco who will allow driveway camping, remember that California will allow travelers to stay overnight in day-camp spots, provided you don't put up tents, etc. and are gone by 8 AM the next morning. That would allow you a 24 hour stop-over, if you got there at 8 AM one day and left at 8 AM the next day. Google California State Parks to find what you need in California.

I hope this helps.

There are several winery's in Livermore for camping. Also a park on Hwy 18 west of Oakland, Cabot Regional - almost redwood setting. Mt Diablo has sites but I wouldn't try to go there unless you are really good at backing up. If my ex-neighbor wasn't out of town I'd send you there. We did a couple days there before the last IRG.

Brian and Sandy, I'm sort of heading north but I have to visit 3 National Park s go to San Francisco and see friends in Redmond and then see a few places in Oregon and Washington then you were on my list I'm then headed to Alaska.

About San Francisco I don't mind driving. If I have to I'll stay at a hotel. By then I'll need a shower

Ask your friends in Redmond about Lake Billy Chinook just 19 miles to the north.
And Cove Palisades SP........best bathrooms in the Oregon Camping system.

When Brain says best . he means "BEST" and I can second that!! which is to mean the SHOWERS are great and the price for the camp spot includes the shower!!! Clean, hot water, clothing hooks, lots of room with sit down seat !!!! there is even a place for your soap !!!!! Oregon has some nice camp grounds - but so far, of all that I have seen, this one is the nicest along with one fantastic view for a look see !!!
Lets see, National parks heading north - you got to see Crater Lake (even if you do just a drive though) Mt. Rainer (another nice drive though) than North Cascades (another great drive though) which will take you to Hy 97 in eastern Washington and northbound to Brian and Sandi's place which is another nice drive. They are not that far over the border - about 75 miles. (Olympic National Park??? it is a nice drive around but at no point do you drive though it - if you enter in at any point, you for the most part have to exit back out the same way you came in. Great park for hiking but not the most accessible for just viewing or accessing from a vehicle) If you were to leave Mt. Rainer westbound, than north to Olympia, Wash,.. drive northwest from there around the west side of Hood Canal which will put you along the east side of the Olympic Park and you can than take the ferry back to Whidbey Island (nice camp grounds at Deception Pass) at Port Townsend which will put you onto Hy 20 east to the North Cascades National Park - Hood Canal is a beautiful drive along with a way to avoid the Seattle/Tacoma I-5 drive though that is a traffic night-mare. Have a good trip and stay safe.

Ted, that is quite amigo zag route. Remember she has to return some how, so it is not necessary to see both side of Wa. on a northward path.
No wonder it says "Wandering Aimlessly" on the back of your teardrop. :R
Maybe you could hook up with her for a camping night or two on the way???

Just messing with you Ted.
Didn't we do more than 4 National Parks in Canada in one day on the Fall Crawl last year?
