Generators? Best bang for your buck?

Usually with any new engine , we run it briefly and then change the oil , this gets rid of any left over metal bits from the machining process… But after it’s broken in , it does relly seem “excessive“ like DWT said … For intended use , that would be an oil change every tankfull ...

It appears that the HF 2000 is a rebadged WEN. The wen manual says to check the oils every 8 hours and replace every 25 hours.

My USG said that and I'd have to go check my Champion. But with 8 oz of oil in these little engines I have no problem changing it often.

Wanted to add to this, my "smart meter" at home got dumb yesterday, so I'm on the second day of running off my little WEN generator.

Its been outside in the rain, running two fridge/freezers, the sump pump, a few lights and charging a bunch of portable electronics, it even ran the coffee maker this morning (thank god). I have it running in its eco mode, and it ran for 8 hours, and still said its tank was 2/3rds full this morning.

pretty sweet little thing that guy.
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

I believe you are around the third person that said those are good generators. For a decent price too.

I haven't heard any negative comments on the Honda's but when you take into consideration of how often is the unit going to be used price does make a difference. If I was a person that spent most of the year in a teardrop or full time spending the money on a top notch generator would be worth it. Generators like the WEN seem to be a good option though especially when I hear good things about them.

Thanks for the info

Harbor Freight has an online only coupon for the Predator 2000 for $399. Shipping is $6 plus tax. Ours came out to about $428, should be here in a week or so.

It is a Yamaha 2000 clone, and is essentially the same as the Wen 2000i.

If anyone is looking for a WEN like the one in the original post, Home Depot has them again. I may get myself one for Christmas!

I am fairly certain the Wen and the HF Predator are the same unit with different cases, both Yamaha knock-offs. We have the Predator 2k and really like it. If I bought another one, I'd just compare the prices. Can't say for sure, but I've heard that many say the Yamaha engine parts fit both.

Bill n Robi wrote:So we are prepping for a 18 day off road/boon dock trip. Pulled the generator out of the shed where it has set since September of last year. Hooked it into the mount, OMG it took two pulls to start it..... and a slight adjustment to the mixture since it was set for 8000 feet.

Synth oil still as good as the day it was changed, day after after the break in run two years ago. No stale fuel, no carbon build up, no clogged spark arrester.

You can't go wrong with a propane conversion.

I don't know, I never head out when it is that cold. I'll check with my propane expert but I think there is a bottom limit to a propane tank temperature.

Any conversion should allow for still using gasoline for those extreme temps.
Bigger tanks, horizontal tanks and/or dual regulators allow for use in colder temps, goes by surface area of the liquid.

12V tank heating elements are available, like for diesel fuel lines.

yeah, had break in mine with gas so always can use it, just don't like the smell. Yep, horizontal tank was what I was trying to remember for low temp.

If I put a heating pad on the propane tank, I'll take a picture of my wife's face and post it. It won't be a happy face I can guarantee you.
