Canvas skinned teardrop roof?

Postby doris s. » Wed Sep 06, 2017 7:27 pm

Has anyone skinned a plywood teardrop with canvas including the roof? I was wondering how waterproof wood is skinned in canvas for a roof. I'm guessing using an oil based exterior paint would make it more durable? Not sure. Any advice would be great thanks.

Doris , from our experience ( JMHO) , skinning over plywood is a Good Thing and really helps prevent the bent plywood outer surface from developing tension cracks over time ( cracks that let water in and Rot the ply ) The canvas absorbs the Tension loads and creates a durable surface once well painted … Latex and Oil paint have both been used with great success .

Note : had we skinned the plywood roof of our First TD trailer , we’d probably still have it … :duh:

The front and rear sections of our camper are PMF. I did the top in EPDM rubber. Had I really known how good the PMF is, I would have never used EPDM. My canvas/paint sections are smooth, flat, waterproof and look great. My EPDM section, while 100% waterproof, is bubbly in some spots. I spent about $100 more doing the EPDM that I would have if I had only used PMF. EPDM is also a LOT heavier than canvas. Next time, no EPDM, only PMF.

Thanks Teardroppers,

My teardrop will be parked outside. Sounds like canvas works well in keeping the wood protected.
Thanks for the links and in put.

PMF, equals: premature malfunctioning fabric. EPDM equals: early puncturing damned material. Naw, just kidding. I have absolutely no idea either. I'll stay tuned, and we will both learn about this together.

Pmf is also know as ghetto fibreglass.

And for fun, epdm is ethylene propylene diene monomer, rubber roofing but also gaskets and vibration isolation pad.

Im torn between pmf and real fibreglass, which lets the wood show. Im convinced either is a pretty good skin, both needing coatings.
