Removing duct tape residue from bare aluminum

Postby 2bits » Tue Oct 31, 2017 9:12 am

Mornin, I have a '68 Scotty with bare, polished aluminum sides and one of my window latches broke on the way home from a gathering so I had to duct tape it shut. The latch is now repaired but the residue from the duct tape remains. It's been on there a couple months. The first and only thing I've tried so far is goo be gone since that is what it is made for and it just laughed at me. I don't want to mess up the aluminum although re polishing is no big deal. Not sure what else I might try. Any ideas?

I presume your "Goo Be Gone" is similar to Goof Off. But maybe not, check and try, if it turns out to be different.

After that, rubbing alcohol.

After that, go to a sporting goods store and get a can of Gun Scrubber. This is an aerosol solvent that will evaporate after doing its thing.

If none of that works, I would just cover the whole thing in duct tape, and own the look.

Yes boo b gone is the same thing a goof off which is the same as goo gone which is actually the brand of the same stuff that I used. I tried WD-40 but didn't do anything. Someone else on another forum also suggested mineral spirits which makes sense to me, so I am going to try that next. :worship:

If it really is bare, polished aluminum, you could also try acetone. Dunno if that’s already an ingredient in anything you tried so far.

Is eucalyptus oil sold in the US?

If so, get a bottle (it is found in supermarkets in Australia) and use that. It will remove the residue without a problem, it is safe, non toxic and smell nice as well.

Mineral spirits was a fail so I fell back to my automotive experience and tried brake cleaner (after testing on a inconspicuous spot) it worked perfectly and instantaneous with no streaks or discoloration.

I've had good results with Goof Off, it is not the same as Goo Gone. If that doesn't work, I'm sure lacquer thinner will do the trick. I use it to remove the residue left by silicone caulk. :D

I'd like to know if this eucalypso oil works.

Would you mind putting a few strips of duct tape on the side of your TD for the winter, and checking it in March ?

Please ? How about if I said "please" ?

Thanks in advance.

It appears that it is available in your country. See here: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Eucalyptus-O ... l/31210573

Some years ago, I had a need to remove a protective film from a machined piece of construction machinery. The recommended product turned out to be lethal in a confined space so we substituted eucalyptus oil and completed the job successfully with the operator not having a cold or flu for about 6 months.

It really is a very good product.

You are, obviously, not aware that it is coming into summer in Australia.

I can guarantee that eucalyptus oil will remove any sticky residue from any surface. Try it if you don't believe me.

Not everything useful comes from America.

It worked for me too, after I ruined a couple spots using Goop-Off and other stuff.
