ClimateRight Portable 5000 BTU Air Conditioner and Heater

Postby crttaz » Sun Jan 28, 2018 1:13 am

About $500-550, self enclosed AC/heat unit, only found it as someone linked the Escapade Camper Company where they offered it as a $500 upgrade...

Might be an option, although not so cost friendly. I plan on having a Honda EU2000 with me, which would be plenty.

needing just 6.5amps the EU2000 should work quite well

They also make a 2500 BTU unit that should be big enough for most TTTs. It is marketed as a dog house heater/ac and is listed at $430 at Wayfair. It says it is good for about 400 cubic feet

There's a sticky topic in the electrical sub forum about hacking a 5k btu unit.A homemade version of a climate right.

One example:

Escapade has it as an installed option, aka less work involved :)

I installed the 2500 BTU ClimiteRight based on the websites guidelines. In heat mode it works great, but for cooling it's not quite powerful enough. Would have been better off with the 5000 BTU unit.

Overall it works well. The compressor is housed in my front trunk box which has a hatch that I can open for for compressor circulation. The only big negative is the very high price.

I rolled my own from a $120 window unit. Note to self, remember where you store the insulated ducts next time.

We've used the 5,000 btu model for four seasons now, and it works well for a small trailer. The 2,500 btu model would have been too small. My only complaint is the lowest temperature on the thermostat for the heater is 61f which is too hot for sleeping for us. We have the wired thermostat because the wireless remote won't work from inside the trailer. A 2,000 watt gen will handle it just fine.

I'm a proponent of the 5000 BTU window unit (my LG uses 4.6 amps), being installed directly into a teardrop build, with no hoses or ducting to install. And for heat, just bring along a couple of small space heaters like my Lasko - My Heat units, that use only 200 watts of power each (1.67 amps each). In my TTT build, I over-complicated the design, to be able to run the A/C with my trailer hatch closed, but others have done less complicated A/C installs, that worked very well. I just like the fact that I can decide to run my A/C anytime, anywhere, because it is with me every trip, as is my 2500 watt on-board generator. I didn't want to have to haul it in and out, and having it exposed to the elements, critters, or vandals. So, for $100-150 + $75 for peripheral ductwork/wood framing, for the A/C, and $30 for my small heaters, it's a much cheaper alternative to the Climate-Right system.

I’ve done both in the Wall and diy remote. The remote system is way quieter, and it doesn’t cycle as much, so air stays drier. Also nice to be able to leave it home when not needed.

What about using this setup in three different ways?

As installed in the Escapade trailer, able to be used with the TV (Honda Oddy setup as a camper) and as well to help cool the 22x22 garage a little bit. No it wont get the temps in the garage down to low 70's, but it would help pull the humidity down and chill it a little.

The lone window in the garage isn't set up for a small 5-10k btu unit.
