Insurance Woes for the Astroliner

Postby Atomic77 » Tue Apr 03, 2018 10:19 am

Hi All and Greetings from soggy, cold Indiana...

We are excited to be in the home stretch on the Astroliner build and have been struggling for weeks to obtain insurance. Our insurance man who carries our insurance on everything that we own including our home, cars, truck and motorcycle, seems to be having one heck of a time finding insurance for us. I'm sure there are others here that have faced this issue: We built the Astroliner on a 1984 Palamino Pop-Up frame complete with title. Of course, when the insurance companies run the Vin number it comes up as a 1984 Palomino worth $100. He is having difficulty getting someone to ensure the camper for "an agreed upon value." We have submitted pictures of the build in detail but still no luck. Anyone here have suggestions or names of companies that will cover us? Thank you!
Michael

I had similar issues, but my State Farm guy eventually agreed to insure my TD for an "agreed value." Hope you get this resolved, your build is pretty amazing.

Thank you. My insurance guy is having difficulty finding a company that will do "agreed upon value."

At first my insurance company balked when I tried to insure my home made teardrop even though it was had a VIN # and was fully titled. They couldn't get it insured under my auto insurance. I finally mentioned that they were insuring my boat under my home owners policy, why can't they insure my teardrop the same way? I gave them a replacement value and they than submitted it to the insurance carrier. No problems and fully insured for replacement value.

My insurance agent can not find a company to insure our '96 Casita fiberglass camper that has a value of around $10,000, or our '84 Uhaul fiberglass camper that is worth around $5,000. I did not even ask about our '46 teardrop. They will however insure my '76 pickup at whatever value I want to put on it, without question. I have heard that State Farm may insure a trailer at a stated value, but I assume that is if you have all your insurance with them. Good Sam called me once about insuring my "RV", but when I said it was 20 years old, their answer was "have a nice day, goodbye". So we take our chances, and if something happens, Oh Well, we've got our money's worth out of all of them and will buy another if we want. With three vehicles and a house insured, I'm paying enough insurance money already.

when I had my teardrop built in 2012 by a private homebuilder, it was built on a commercial trailer frame and had no problem getting it insured or licensed for what I had paid for it per the sales receipt , but it's replacement value was a lot higher than what I paid for it. When I tried to get it raised they refused to raise it saying it was only worth what I had paid - after getting 'new' replacement cost estimate's from a few teardrop company's making trailers, State Farm finally conceded and allowed me to raise the replacement value amount too what I said it was worth. (of course there was also a increase in the yearly rate)

Nationwide had no difficulty with ours. And we used it.

Michael, with us (and every situation is different) our camper is insured by our homeowners policy when the camper is parked and is insured by our car insurance when we are moving. If more than 50 miles from home, then it is insured by homeowners again, when parked at like a camp site or whereever. It is just a rider on our normal policies. I was just looking at our premium on our house we just bought in West Virginia (not in Florida any more and loving it) and it is on that policy, as it was in FL.

Glad to see you are going again.

Sounds like full-time dwellers will have much more difficulty than those with a S&B home policy.

Michael,

The local state farm agent offered to insure my trailer for the value of the parts cost.
They would not go to an increased value including the cost of some labor.... To do that
I would have to change my policies over to that company at an increased cost. My rough
build was not worth the cost for the fire and theft insurance.

As already stated, homeowner's and auto Insurance covers things in this state when home
or in transit.

We can do the same. For a value of $100.

So, I'm assuming proof of all receipts?
