interior ceiling 5x8 trailer

Postby meedgar » Thu Jul 05, 2018 12:27 pm

Spars are up and ready to put ceiling in. Need advice on which way to cut wood for ceiling in 5X8 ripple designs please.

1. Cut 2.5" x 8".

Easier to bend and a continous seem down the middle. I can hide with a 2inch piece of trim down the middle. Run a silicone bead on outside of ceiling before insulating.

2. Cut 5" feet x 4 feet.

Much harder to bend. Less of a cut to keep edge accurate.

Thanks for any and all advice.

What wood are you using? I would not want a seem down the middle. If the bend is doable , I would go with it.

5" feet x 4 feet

I haven't had my coffee yet and am struggling to understand your options. But that's me in the morning.

1/8" Baltic birch makes for a great, easy to work with ceiling. Here's one installed on a little 4x8'. I clamped the two pieces on the bench, and glued a 4" strip on the top. The piece was then flipped and given three coats of poly before installing it. The seam looks great on the inside.

If you're wondering... with this building method the spars go on next.

Tony

p.s. "Much harder to bend..." that tells me you need to reconsider the material for the given curve you're trying to achieve. Plywood that is bent with that much stress could begin to fail in the future.

suggestion - got to www.oramateardroptrailer.com and check out this builder's 'build' photos - he uses the same process Tony Latham is speaking of here. This builder has a lot of photo's here to look at for 'idea's'

I used baltic birch, 5x5 in 1/8". I varnished mine face up first. Better finish and gloss than trying to brush upside down. I have one seam running side to side across the ceiling middle, I later covered with a 1" trimpiece.
