Deep cycle battery maintenance

Postby Cosmo » Wed Jul 11, 2018 8:08 pm

I was unaware of battery sulfation and early battery death or reduction in performance until recently
Apparently its easy to get rid of.

A good converter/charger like the PD4045 does that automatically.

We have the Aims Power Systems inverter/charger, and it has a de-sulphation setting built in. We haven't tried it yet.
The manual sure does have some strong language, a bit daunting. Here it is, copied verbatim from the manual:

De-sulphation
The de-sulphation cycle (switch position 8 ) is a very dangerous setting if you do not know what you are
doing. Before attempting to use this cycle you must clearly understand what it does and when and how
you would use it.
What causes sulphation? This can occur with infrequent use of the batteries or if the batteries have been
discharged low enough that they will not accept a charge. This cycle is a very high voltage charge cycle
designed to try to break down the sulphated crust that is preventing the plates from taking a charge and
allowing the plates to clean up and accept a charge once again.

I cant say I had a case of sulfation for sure. Desulfating the battery seemed to improve performance a little. In the off season have my battery charger plugged into the light switch so it charges when I flip on the light. I suspect I am not taking it up to full charge and maybe that is contributing???? No science on my part just fear and suspicion ha ha.

What model do you have? The ones I'm seeing are $900-$1,200. That will but a lot of battery.
Holy cow, Rose is a teenager now! Done? Surely you jest. A teardrop is never "done".

We have 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter charger, $588 online.
Seems just right for us. Surges to 6000 watts, low frequency operation to start an air conditioner, advanced smart charging; built in transfer switch, breaker. It’s really everything we need in one box. Our air conditioner only draws 800 watts running and 1200 watts startup so it’s oversized / derated for ours

De-sulphation is usually not an issue anymore. Ever since it was discovered that 'Die-Hard' batteries were so good because they added magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) to them, almost all manufacturers now have an additive cocktail to fix the issue. Not saying it can't happen, just saying it is not as much of an issue as in years past.

Got a link to share but switching out from IE means all my bookmarks are a mess right now.

Battery Minder disagrees. Of course a selling point of their product is sulfation. :)
http://www.batteryminders.com/avoid-battery-sulfation/

Optima says sulfation happens in their batteries
https://www.optimabatteries.com/en-us/s ... gm-battery
Optima has a pretty good battery video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99oGcq4-t-4&t=261s

Battery university seems to think sulfation is still in play
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/arch ... dern_times

Wikipadia has a whole section on it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead%E2%8 ... esulfation

If you locate the article about the chemistry preventing sulfation please do post I am interested.

Thanks
