Anyone using a RAM CA-5210-B A-Frame coupler?

Postby hwitten » Fri Jul 20, 2018 7:04 pm

Now that I have the trailer bounce under control I also want it "quiet" :)

There is no adjustment to tighten the couplers' grip on the ball so there is the resulting annoying noise at the coupler/ball.

My receiver is tight, no play.
Leaves just the coupler as source of the "hitch" related noise.

Wondering if anyone has this coupler and if they have successfully silenced it.

Just came off an 1840 mile trip and thanks to all the help re weights, tire pressure, balancing, etc. it was a very pleasant trip.
Pleasant aside from the clank and clatter caused by for/aft play between ball and coupler.

Using an extra 2in ball I checked movement and wile side to side is tight there is quite a bit of fore/aft "play". Normally there would be an adjustment nut but mine doesn't have any.

Looking for suggestions to a possible remedy. I currently use a doubled over ziplock bag and it helps some until if wears out/falls off.
Not keen on replacing the welded on a-frame coupler.

Maybe find / buy hitch with adjusting nut assembly and drill, file, whittle? a matching hole / design in your old hitch and then install it just like you are familiar with. Guess the question will be time or money, your call... LOL
Good luck, keep us informed. Mike

That will do it. Might be a pain every time you hook up or unhook, but it will work. Mike

Know a welder that can add a bead of weld to hold the connector
closer to the ball. Perhaps add a ramp to force it tighter when its
tightened/snapped closed?

That's probably something I'll consider when the coupler is actually worn. While new and under warranty I won't mess with cutting and welding :)
Already did a version 2 of my solution, making it easier to adjust without needing a wrench. Looking forward to next outing to give it the ol' smoke-test.
