Tesla Model X towing Foamie

Postby bennelson » Sun Sep 16, 2018 7:25 am

Hi Friends,

Yesterday, I caught up with my friend, Bruce. He's been an EV (Electric Vehicle) driver for a long while and built a foamie based on what he learned on this web forum. He designed it specifically to fit in his garage and be towed by an electric. Not long ago, he upgraded from a Nissan Leaf to a Tesla Model X.

Yesterday was an Electric Car display where I finally got to see the X and the Camper together. Here's a little video. I think the trailer turned out nice!

Apparently the Model X has some good towing capabilities. The question is, how much does it reduce the range?

My off-road camper build on an M116A3 military chassis:

Tow vehicle: 2008 Jeep Liberty with a 4 inch lift.

The Tesla Model X weighs over 5,000 lbs. The trailer weighs 1,000.

So, in start and stop traffic, I'd say that it only reduces range by around 20%

At high speeds, it's definitely the aerodynamics that become the big factor. That particular Model X has a 100kWh battery pack and 295 mile range. Even if the trailer substantially shortened range, he can still go plenty far, especially considering how many Tesla SuperChargers there are out there and that there's typically one about every 100 miles.

I have a friend with a Model S who pulled a teardrop from Milwaukee to the Grand Canyon and back. He said that the trailer put a pretty big dent in his range, but it was still no problem because of the supercharging system.

I would like to see the difference in mileage if he would have rounded the roof.Image
