Irontron vs Ultra Tow

Postby greenchicken » Sat Nov 24, 2018 2:23 pm

Ready to place trailer order at Norther Tool.

I am planning to buy the Ultra Tow (#49802) which is aluminum

But they also have the Irontron (#37552)

The guy I spoke to at Northerntool and they recommend Ultra-Tow.

Looking for additional opinions.

You mean reco's for similar spec trailers from other sources?

That one shows

> 45 MPH max. towing speed

would really concern me with insurance if SHTF

Hey.. I didn't notice that. Both of them have a 45 mph max speed.

How seriously do I need to take that? Is that something to just cover themselves?

I am definately going to be traveling over 45, probably closer to 65.

Gives your insurance a loophole so they don't need to pay a big liability claim.

Ball would be in your court to prove that factor didn't contribute.

I just did a search for Northern Tool on this site and found many members using this exact trailer. So I guess I will just go for it.

I have the aluminum trailer under mine. It was easy to modify and looks great.

I've never had a problem towing my Ironton @ 65. I added spacers and 14" wheels, greased up the axle bearings and kept the gross weight around 1000 lbs.

I concur! Stock tires on NT/HF trailers are, shall we say, lacking in quality. Replace the tires, preferably with a larger size; re-grease the bearings (and/or purchase new ones); and save yourself the hassle of a future blow-out. I don't mean to unnecessarily hate on the tires, but they're just not designed for cross-country highway travel.
