Living hinge mounting question

Postby Rhinoman64 » Wed Nov 28, 2018 1:49 pm

Hi all. My build is not a typical teardrop profile, but has the galley hatch at a 45 degree angle from the roof similar to a weekender. My plan has been to use the hurricane hinge with the aluminum bar from Vintage as shown in the second diagram below. The walls are not notched.
I am using the wide T-molding and seal that Frank diagrams on his site.

My questions for those of you that have experience with the Monroe plastic "living" hinges:

1. Are you still happy with it as far as durability, leak prevention, etc.?
2. Can it be mounted at a 45 as shown in diagram 1?
3. If the answer to #2 is yes, will I still need to create an offset by raising the body side? I assume yes, but I'm having a hard time thinking in 3 dimensions at the moment. It would depend I suppose on the width of the area where it bends - i.e., is it wide enough to bridge the offset?

The reason I am considering this option over the hurricane hinge is primarily cost differential (75% difference) but also that the plastic hinge would have to be less likely to leak in that it is a solid piece. However, if the durability is suspect I sure don't mind spending extra on the hurricane hinge.

Your help as always is greatly appreciated.

I had one on my tongue box that I purchased from McMaster. "Polyolefin plastic resist salt water, oil, solvents, and UV rays."

I have no idea why it failed but I replaced it with a hurricane hinge.

p.s. And no idea what the brand was.

I used this type hinge from Vintage Technologies. I covered the top of both sides with 3/4 x 1/8" flat aluminum because I read on forum it can "pucker".
So far no issues with the hinge in 4 years.Which ever you use be sure to have 3/4 to 1" overhang from sidewall to keep water out of galley. Not sure about your
2nd question of offset but the 45 degree angle should be ok.

I also used the Vintage Technology hinge. After two years it is like new.
