Some Yellowstone tips

Postby Modstock » Sat Jan 26, 2019 3:59 pm

Thinking of a possible trip to jellystone (haha). Any tips or experiences you have with your TD ?

Probably come in the west entrance and and work our way to the eastern end of the YS lake then exit southern.
Madison c.g. / Bridge bay - 2 nights ea.
May be fishing. Im mostly a bait fisherman so , I 've seen the rules.
Probably just float a bubble and fly.

Shelly and I tent camped there in 2014. Our favorite was Norris Geyser basin

157163 157162 157161 157160 157166

Much more variety, and not quite the crowds of Old Faithful.

157167

Saw this guy on the way back to camp that evening

157165 157164

Basically, there was a traffic jam, and when I got out to investigate, the griz was protecting a kill in the grass a mile or so away. Close enough for me; I wish I'd had a better zoom lens.

If you are going during the summer, it will be busy. Go to the most popular sites early in the morning. By 10 AM it gets hard to find parking.

Seems like most of the bear problems are because of picnic baskets. So leave the picnic basket at home and you probably won't have any bear problems.

PS advice given in this post is worth the price you paid for it.

Bears? It's the other critters you need to keep your eye on.

Hi Tony
I may need ti recruit you or pick your brain at least, as the PNW Tear Jerkers Annual Fall Crawl will be in Idaho this year 2019.
Looking for suggestions on Campgrounds, Attractions, Routes, etc.
This years theme was going to be "Sip and Soak", so any suggestions that include Wineries & Hot Springs would be appreciated.
And are you giving any thought to attending this years Farm Gathering in Kalispell MT,???

You mentioned Madison C.G...... I think that's the one that I was supposed to stay at when I went. When I go to reserved places, I check routes with both Mapquest and GPS. Both said to take a route to the campground that all but knocked the fillings out of my teeth and I couldn't drive faster than 5 or 10 mph. (I think it was called Madison Rd.) I finally turned around and found an unreserved spot at the local KOA (which was great, by the way). When I called and cancelled at Madison, she told me that there was another way to get to her campground but you had to go north, above the campground to get to that road. So, to be on the safe side, please call them and ask for directions from them and don't depend on your GPS.

Also, Slowcowboy used to tell us not to depend on GPS when in Wyoming because it sometimes took you on wild goose chases...don't know if that's still true or not. Just in case, be certain to have a real paper map with you.

We may have to jump on the Kalispell rendezvous. What's the date?

That run up or down the Lochsa on Highway 12 (Lewiston to Missoula) is hard to beat. Lots of USFS campgrounds but ya gotta have a full tank of gas.

Thanks fellas for the tips. We may try mid-ish May but depends if I can get a site (waiting for callback).
Probably head towards grand Teton NP after. Maybe stay a night there.

Might get a 3 day fishing pass. Any lures recommended ???
Usually take a pic and let em go free to swim another day.

Tell me about lava hot springs. Probably stop in while returning home.

On the way up we may have to stop at Rexburg for a night. Any rv parks to avoid/recommend ?

Im mostly a paper map guy. I've had GPS try to lead me astray even when I knew the way. It kept telling me to get off at every exit on a recent trip.

Any other teardrops going to Yellowstone around that time ?

We always stay at the campground at Mammoth then. (No reservation system there but we have not had a problem for mid-afternoon arrivals.)

I don't know of any other campgrounds open in the park until after Memorial Day. But perhaps there are. Download the Allstays Camp app and it'll be a big help for campgrounds.

In mid-May, the rivers and creeks will be too high to fish. I don't know if the season is even open until June 1st. Dunno about lake fishing in the park.

Usually take a pic and let em go free to swim another day.
And that'll keep you out of jail in Yellowstone. :frightened:

I am going to Yellowstone for my 2nd time this June. I tried to make reservations and all the sights are booked for the window we had. I called and was informed Fishing Bridge campground (the only one with hookups) will be closed all summer. Also all of the cabins are closed for remodel at Canyon and Lake Lodge. this means the supply of camping spot is lower so the campgrounds out side the park are filling up fast.

Also keep in mind when you look for a site the length you need is the combo of the you trailer + your tow rig.

Just a word warning about camping in Yellowstone. I was there in the Summer of 2016 an watch the rangers ticket several people for leaving there cooler out while there were not at there site. Not oly did they leave a ticket, they also took the cooler....

I've been to Yellowstone 3 times in the past 10 years and it seems to get more crowded each time. Of course I go during the summer season, but that's because the weather is better and everything is open. From what I understand, in mid May many things will be closed and you also run the risk of a snow storm, although I guess they can happen during any month. Patience is also needed when visiting Yellowstone. It takes a long time to get from place to place, especially when all traffic stops because of a bear along the road. I got stuck in a bear jam for about 1/2 hour and by the time traffic started moving I could only see the bear far off in the distance. The parking lots at the main attractions are often full during the peak hours in the summer, so sometimes you have to keep going and return another time. With that said, there are many places in Yellowstone that are less busy and you can almost have those areas to yourself. Have a great time.

...and go out the park into Cody and back around into Montana and Livingston by bear tooth pass...

Slow is spot-on. Better advice would be hard to find.
