PROPEX HEATER NOISE REDUCTION

Acoustical ducting. It works (in my opinion).

Thanks Cosmo for the timely post. I was placing an order from Westy Ventures right around when you posted it. I'm hoping to see a bigger improvement in part because my vent ducting is more exposed than yours, so I get the sound from inside and outside of the duct. We'll see how it goes, I should know more next week.

How long is the section of ducting that you've replaced? I recall reading somewhere that a 1m run gives you the most noise reduction.

I have limited experience. The ducting is 1M in length. I cut about 6 inches off of it to fit correctly. Was a big improvement for me and well worth the cost. There is the sound from the combustion chamber, fans, air movement etc.

In my case ducting does quiet the sound from the ducting in a measurable and pleasing way. You can see in the video how much louder my voice is (80DB ompared to the background noise. In my case at 60 DB the heater is about 5DB louder than silence which is pretty good.

Where and how you have the heating unit installed has a lot to do with the other sounds. I can probably dampen that sound too if you take that into consideration in the design. Besides lowering the decibels the ducting seemed to lower the pitch of the sound that does escape the hot air vent. To me - before it had a higher pitch fan whine now it sounds to me like a lower pitch sound at lower volume, which is more agreeable to me.

Adding some of the acoustical ducting to the air intake of the furnace helps lower the sound too.
Others have this unit and may want to share their experience.

Do you have a link to the acoustical ducting? I can't find it on their site.

Very interesting! I don't have a Propex heater, but I'm testing our Climateright air conditioner and find the vent output is very noisy. Wonder if I can find something like what Propex sells that's a bit larger diameter to match the Climateright vents? I may have to do some research (and development).

Thanks Cosmo!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be getting the air filter for sure. I haven't run mine yet to know if I want the muffler, hope to get it hooked up this week and can give it a try.

I'm thinking I might want a filter for the return air, I'm sucking air from the galley and don't want to blow dust into the cabin.
