Windows

Postby Soderholm » Sun Aug 04, 2019 1:29 pm

I was pretty firm on doing Wylie windows on my build, using clear glass cutting boards.
The only thing I don’t like is the wedges intruding into the space with Wylie windows.
I was planning on using flat foam gasket around the edges for sealing against water (the same foam I use for hatch gaskets when building kayaks).
What do others think of this......Instead of the Wylie wedges, I just have a lip on the bottom to set the glass, then having a turning clip on each side to squeeze the glass against the gasket?
Thanks ahead of time for any input.

On the ones we use .When installing screen. Used soft R.T.V. to hold screen in place. Before cure press cutting boards glass to forum seal . With Wylie just maker thinner. You also can adjust air flow.

I still don’t see what keeps the water out at the bottom of the Wylie window, especially while traveling. Any insight on this?
Thanks

I looked into Wylie windows a few years ago when first planning our build, but rejected them because they take up room in the cabin, which is at a premium in a teardrop.

My understanding is that the water does get to the bottom, and for that reason drain holes, at the bottom of the outer frame to the outside, are necessary.

Well, truth be known, water does get in and here's what I did about it. Not my original idea. Someone on tnttt suggested it.
See the two weep holes in the bottom crotch?

Image

How I did it... Drill out 3/8" or bigger from seam (joint between door and bottom trough of Wiiley) to outside on a downward angle. May want to start with a small bit to see if you like the resulting angle. Then drill out to 3/8" or bigger. Tape the outside of the hole with something that is epoxy tight (as opposed to water tight). Fill with epoxy (better done with door on horses laying flat). It may take several applications as the epoxy may shrink. After the epoxy is set drill a 1/4" hole at the correct angle right through the middle of the bigger diameter. Again, start with a small bit to make sure you have the angle correct. Now you have two, or more, weep holes to accommodate most rainfall when you are parked.

Notice I said parked. I will take a photo and post later tonight of my enhancement that has kept my Wileys water tight through some crazy downpours while traveling down the road.

Remember, Wileys are a great window and cost very little if you are willing to put in the time to build them. I wouldn't pay for commercially made windows after experiencing my windows for four years now. And I like the look much better than anything I;ve seen commercially built.

Exterior photo of the weep holes. It's a Woody, so, from a distance they look like a couple tight knots.

Exterior of Wiley with "Plug" installed. It works well and I have yet to have a drop of water inside.

Image

Inside view of plug installed. Before I built the plugs I would get a little water that would overflow the bottom of the Wiley frame when there was more rain than could flow through the weep holes. In a downpour on one trip the water soaked the side of my mattress.

Image

And finally a view of the plug. I think it is self explanatory, but, if you have any questions I'll try to answer.

Image

Weather strip is just a D shaped rubber with a small space left open at the seam (always put on bottom when installing) to let anything that gets by a way to drain out. I usually drive without these plugs installed. If I suspect any rain I stop and put them in. Takes a couple minutes on each door.

I am doing windows out of acrylic with bottom drainage as in Wiley for two windows in front of folding side walls, but without the classic Wiley sides. The homemade screen has small notches on the bottom to drain water that gets behind bug screen. I have not finished them yet, but the idea should work.

I'm Interested in how they turn out. Mine are of the classic design I think. There are many improvements over the original idea (from Mr or Ms Wiley). That original idea is still very clever in my opinion.
