Anyone attempted a standy version of Airstream Torpedo?

Postby Danomite » Wed Aug 28, 2019 12:17 am

Hello everyone,
Has anyone made an attempt at a standy (full-size) build of the Airstream Torpedo that Wally Byam sold plans for in Popular Mechanics in the 30's?
I finished my 8' long canned ham standy and am contemplating giving this a try as my next project.
I found a sketch with some measurements in an online search and can't seem to shake the idea.
I made my canned ham with a 1 inch square tube skeleton (0.065" wall thickness), and would probably do the same with this one. I also found a recycling place that has mill finish .040" aluminum sheets for $2/pound if I buy 100 pounds or more.

Not so interested in the Airstream, but I would love to see more of your standy. I'm located in Lansing if you ever want to meet in the middle for a beer or three...
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

Sounds good to me. Actually, I am heading about an hour west of the bridge for Labor Day weekend. The Michihistrigan Campground (on US2 near Gould City) has a log cabin bar in it so I can drink too much and not worrying about driving!
The boy and I are going to walk the bridge on Monday. I haven't done the walk in years.
BTW, I have my standy in Build Journals. It's called Central Michigan Canned Ham.
Cheers,
Dan

I looked her up after typing that. Would still love to see her in person.
This weekend is spoken for on my side, but maybe some time in the future
