Las Vegas NV - DMV procedures

Postby Spazz86 » Thu Dec 17, 2020 9:50 am

Got myself a harbor freight trailer for a hundred bucks in great condition. Planning to build a camper as everybody else's, want to extend the sides out from a four by eight to a five by eight and wondering if anybody lives in Las Vegas or the Las Vegas area that could help me with the procedures on how to register it with the DMV when it's all said and done?

Did a quick search. Try dmvnv.com
Small trailers under 1,000lbs are registered with a little license plate.
Call em with your (intended build) and they can send you the proper forms.

In Utah it's anything single axle and under 1,00lbs dosent require a plate. Had no problems towing through Vegas.

Yes for trailers, but a home built camper is different in most states, especially when you extend the trailer width by 1 foot. Just hoping someone here has already done it in or around LV

Few LEO just hand out big fines for violations like that

warnings, a week or so to get things copacetic

So yes, begging forgiveness rather than asking permission.

Places like huge dense cities, SF Chicago NYC, maybe not so much

IMO, just get it registered in your name, license it and never say another word. Build your camper on the trailer AFTER you license it. Nobody says what you can haul on your trailer.

I went through the weight nonsense with the local (northern Nevada) folks. The DMV said ‘weigh it’. The sheriff said weigh it (there is a scale at the dump in town) but nobody would say how I was supposed to get it to the scale legally. That was my last discussion with them. Yours for sure weighs less than 1000 pounds.

I bought a used trailer.
Registered it in my name.
Did the build.
Drove to the dump on trailer registration, weighed it, went to the motor registration office, filled out the form and changed classification from trailer to caravan on the spot.
I widened it by putting a thicker and longer axle in it, but stayed under the 750kg/1650lbs that defines a very light trailer under the regs, thus ensuring no engineering certification needed.
Of course, I'm in Australia, where we seem to have less administrative differences between states and a national standard applicable in all states.
I do think it seems the way to go just about everywhere, though.
Buy something already registered/titled, get it transferred into your name, then do the build.

It is a fairly easy process. Nevada does not appear to distinguish between trailer types. So it shouldn't make a difference in you I spect now or later.

There is an affidavit on the website that you fill out. Since it is a kit, you need to being proof of purchase. Take it to an office to get it inspected then take the paperwork I to the office to register. (The inspection checklist is online so you can see what they require before you go in.)

I haven't done this yet for a teardrop. My brother did it with a utility trailer and didn't have much trouble.
