What are you using for a blanket

Postby saltydawg » Sun Dec 20, 2020 10:53 pm

Okay I want a water resistant blanket for in the camper, queen size. I also would like it to be stuffable for storage, which kind of rules out standard comforters.

I have spent and hour looking on amazon at two person sleeping bags, to water resistant camping blankets. Nothing that is stuffable is wide enough, they seem to max out at 55 inches.

Well I did find one, but it was 250 bucks.

WE HAVE ALWAYS USED TWO SLEEPING BAGS ! Both are unzipped completely and we slept on one and covered with the other.

Summer time we use a standard comforter and winter time we use a 4-person sleeping bag (rated at -5°). It's basically two bags zipped together.

We use a down comforter. It's served us well.

Why water-resistant?

* After years of trying different mattress (1 or 2, 4"- 8") and comforter permutations, I gave up and went to a quad-fold mattress and two sleeping bags. I camp alone, and the simplicity of choosing the warm weather (40+ and above), or the colder weather (20 degree to zero...never opened/used since I bought it 40 years ago, if I ever need it) made camping so less complicated. No sheets to tuck in and under mattresses in the cramped 4x8!

* My camping trips since I built the trailer in 2013 have never been in cold weather (46 and rainy, was the lowest I've seen), but have been in mainly hot weather (up to 108 degrees). As-is, the unzipped warm bag needs only to be zipped up to handle my comfort level, usually to keep me from getting too cool from my A/C and fans after the sun goes down. In cooler weather, 1 or 2 Lasko My-heat mini-heaters warm up the cabin sufficiently (I have used them while car-camping down to 8 degrees, when iced-in at work overnight).

As much as possible being carefree on its use as well as dogs who will want to try to get on the bed. Water resistance also means stain resistance. I dont want to have to worry about wet and dirty dogs getting on it and trashing it.

I know my 15 yo sleeping bag goes in to the wash and comes out looking like new even if I get it extremely dirty.

Ha I cant go to the bathroom with out the dogs sitting outside the door waiting for me. I have an invisible fence that does not let the dogs out very far on the driveway. My lab mix was sitting in the snow and ice shivering and crying because he could not see me but would not go inside.

being I do not have a way to heat my trailer without electricity (only have a Mr.Heater if electricity is available = and that does works good) But a month ago or so I was able to 'test' out a new blanket in just under freezing weather - 3 nite's, first 2 = very low 30's with the last one at 28 degrees. I now have a 'weighted' (weighs 15lbs 4x8 size) blanket, got it at W-M for $40, it is the one with a removeable cover. It worked 'GREAT" !!!! it seemed to take only 5/10 minutes for my body-heat to keep me warm for sleep for the nite. Now when I have used it at home a few times, I did find I would have to push it to the side later after getting too warm under it - BUT - at far as using it in the teardrop = from here on, it will be in the trailer in it's storage bag when traveling on down the road..........
