or those who want a trailer as light as possible it's not

For lighting yes but for insulting not so much if your able to run a full sheet of insulation that be much better are even levin the air gap

If you do decide to insulate, really should be included in the design process from the start

the vapour barrier is important, getting as airtight an "envelope" as possible

so that ventilation is well controlled.

Trying to use cooking / body heat / tea lights etc for warmth in mild conditions can be tempting

but you end up turning down the fan too much

which in humid conditions is when condensation can get to be a problem.

I lived in Victorian goldfields country building a mudbrick house, and boy so many grey drizzly weeks freezing our arses off!

John:

Is any of this from personal experience? Or just stuff you've read on the Internet?

I never "Insulted" my Weekender build, but I did cuss at myself a few time when I was building her.

My generic benroy is solid plywood walls but the roof has insulation. I’m in the dry southwest, condensation isn’t usually a concern for me, I hang blankets on the walls when it’s going to be less than 30 when I camp ( so far once in the last 9 years).

Is insulting necessary? No, but it happens.

Yep, Bendigo area, back when land was under AUD $1000 an acre

Over seven years in an owner-builder co-op of multiple families, dozens of home-schooled free range kiddos, mostly in small trailers but also tents then humpies from tip materials

carting water from a public tap 5mi down a washed out road, collecting rainwater, dam water for washing,

dunny a movable bucket in the woods

cutting our own firewood, cooking over open campfires, kiddies up at 5am making pancakes for the 'rents!

later lugging big propane bottles

starting out only electrickery was swapping vehicle Starter batts out when heading to Melbourne.

later massive ex Telecom 2V cells picked up from surplus auctions

boy were solar panels pricey!

Great memories. . .

Is it necessary to insulate. I'm not sure if your using in a location with dry air /low humidity. I did and would I do it again, yes. For the same reason others have mentioned , condensation and a little noise or sound damping . Really only took me a day or less to accomplish. One of those details when your building or designing is not a major event. Leaving your self a core for the material.
For me digging trenches for my wiring so the foam board would lay flat or make a cure was the time consumer. But that was easily done with a hot knife. I hade a small gas torch and a old kitchen knife and fillet knife which the blade was heated and used for sizing and sculpting the foam board. It worked well.

I wojld take it as a compliment, but been a very long time since I deserved that sobriquet.

Still am at heart though, but a sober responsible citizen version.

Built a 6x10 here about ten years ago. Insulated with foam board on the walls, batting glass in the roof. Used that camper for hitting state parks. Glad i did insulate. Heated the thing with a wall mounted electric heater. Worked so well, even on freezing nights, that we often only needed a light blanket. The 5k BTU AC would give you chills on an August noon.

One main benefit was sound. Try and sleep in a popular campground with a bunch of kids running around after curfew hours. Even an inch thickness of foam board does an amazing job.

All the work I did building two layer foam insulated walls was a waste of time and money. Only the roof needs insulation. Ask yourself- Do fair weather campers need an insulated tent?
