Bad time to build?

Postby matphat » Thu Dec 16, 2021 12:59 pm

Howdy all,

Been lurking here for a few years and finally I have a garage to build in and I'm chomping at the bit to get started. However, it looks like material prices are way up all across the board. Based on your experiences, would you consider now to be a less than ideal time to pull the trigger considering material costs? Would you build again now even if it appeared that you'd spend another x% or more than usual? I'm budget conscious and though I'd love to build, own and adventure in a teardrop, I am concerned I'd be paying a premium for the luxury. Any advice?

Thanks!

Only you know your finances but consider these thoughts. I took a year to get to first use. The building is part of the fun too. Start with what you can and buy more as you have funds. The only bits I regret are where I used what was available rather than the right quality. Luckily it is only the storage box so I can redo. That said you don't always have to spend money. I scored steel from Motorcycle packing boxes that the local dealer just had piling up for a run to the tip. Keep an eye out for things that can be repurposed but make sure they are up to the job.

Maybe look into buying a "not completed" project .
My first/last TD was a non finished project.
It had all the aluminum and trim mounted but the hatch needed to be re-done and was bare inside.
Since I could keep it dry in my garage we started camping right away. Then one trip it rained and it leaked. No biggie I had a tarp to cover it during the trip.

Each winter I'd fix the issues. First was the new hatch, then new better trim, made cabinets where a shelf was.

In a few years it was completely restored , even a new axle and tires.

Projects can be had cheap and most shy away but looking at the walls and floor to make sure a good foundation is all that's needed .

Think of the money saved not having to pay taxes for each individual piece.

consider the + % price your cost of entertainment during these difficult times

while building in your garage/shop you will be flying below the radar and keeping socially distanced more so than if you were doing most anything else outside your personal envelope

even w/ the price increases we've been experiencing for the last almost 2 years my projects have kept me busy and sane while making progress on projects i'd been dreaming of for many years

and at the end of the month(s) we still had money :-)

the $$ kitty has actually gained weight thru it all

no major trips

no eating out

no splurging on events

butt remained busy in a productive manner

just this old man's 2¢ worth this morning

Can't put a price on lost adventures. You literally don't know what you will be missing, but it may look like this.Image

Friz,

How are you liking that CLC? I was considering it and was wondering what your review was and if you thought it was worth the extra cash for the kit?

I love it. It is perfect for my needs. That said, my needs are few. I would not consider building the CLC from plans. When you price out the materials and hardware, the kit is a bargain.

Have you look into alternative materials. The trailer I'm working on. Very little thermal bridging cold to heat . Wont rot way lighter equivalent in wood. Counting insulation that wood would not have. Easer to build . Should be 70 to 80 of the cost wood equivalent in wood.
