Doors and Windows

Postby mikeschn » Thu Aug 19, 2004 6:49 pm

This is just a general question about doors and windows...

If someone were to ask you where you get your windows, what would you say? Get em from Grant? That's what I would say... Although the windows that Grant sells are crank out rather than sliding windows, they are affordable priced, and look good.

So now, if someone were to say, where do you get your doors, what would you say?

Did I open up Pandora's Box?

JC Whitney. They're sliders for a van retrofit. I like the look on the wood. They don't leak, screens are good too!

I used horizontal units. They made one for the curbside, and one for the roadside.Image

I'm going to fabricate my own doors and I'm either going to buy the windows from one or more suppliers, or fabricate the windows also. (I'm even considering doing the windows with hardwood)
I thought that the windows were going to be a piece of cake, since I'm a glazing contractor. Most of the windows that I've looked at so far, are more geared towards the van conversion market. For the most part, they are contoured to match the surface of certain makes and models of vans. I have only found a couple of non-contoured frames. If I go with a prefabricated window, it will definately be with an anodized frame. Mill finish aluminum, here on the coast, just doesn't cut it. I've had some bad experiences with the local powder coating company also, so that is out as well.
I haven't sat down yet and really spent a lot of time searching for the windows yet, just looked at what two of my suppliers had to offer. One supplier did have what I wanted, but everything was considered a special order. (More $$$)
I took a quick peek at different door and window hardware also and that seems to be available in just about every concievable application.
Oh Yaa, another bugaboo about these prefabed windows, is the limited choice for wall thickness application.
When I do get my sources dialed in, If I end up going with prefabs, I'll definately share my results.
My main glazing supplier is:http://www.crlaurence.com (I don't know if they sell to the general consumer or not)

Hey Steve,
What's the wall thickness needed for those windows?
That sure is one nice looking woody!
BTW At some point in time not to long from now, I'm gonna have some electrical questions for you.

All my windows came from an RV salvage yard in Montpelier, IN.
$15 each. I made my door.

TJtrailers.com for windows, there even cheaper than JC Whitney and they have differnt size trim rings. Doors? I wish I could have found doors to buy. I am very proud of the ones I built but they were a bear.

Dean, The windows are meant to go in a metal wall, the side of a truck panel. I used them in a door that is 1-1/2" thick. I had to get a little creative to make them work. The end result is nice, and in my solution, the interior got trimmed as well!
I'll take pics of the installation if anyone would like to see. I was in a hurry to finish up for the Tearjerkers gathering at Mystic, so, I missed taking photos  .

Engled,
The frames are aluminum, Right?

Have you seen their Drop Down Window also?
(Based on what the info says, they sound like they also open like a hopper window as well)

Those are the ones I used. Get the trim ring, it makes installing a breeze.

The only pic of the trim ring I could find.

Yes, I think they are powder coated. I wanted to remove the coating and have a bare aluminum finish but had no luck getting it off. I even tried a bead blaster on one of the pulls I had removed and it would barely scratch it. :(
