Window Question

Postby MarksMG » Fri Feb 11, 2005 3:43 pm

I was wondering if anyone knew what the rough opening size is for the 15" x 18" window that Grant sells on his site. I have not taken the time to order the windows, but am at the point where I need to make the cutout now.

Grant's window is very very close to 15x18. So if you were to go 1/8 or 1/4" larger, you would have a perfect fit. I tend to cut things a little closer, so I would go 1/8" larger.

Generally,
Rough openings for "stock size" or "standard size" are what the call out size is.
Manufacturers build these sized windows a bit under that call out size.
As far as making a rough opening for your window in the teardrop, I'd have window in hand or know exactly what the net size is.

I know that having the window in hand is the best idea, but being the procrastinator that I am that is not possible unless I want to wait a week or so to get anymore work done. I think I will just cut it 1/8 over and deal with it if it is wrong when I get the windows.

Why not cut it to the stated size and hope that it is built just under that? If the fit is too tight its no big deal to open up that hole a bit, try putting the wood back though, thats a bit harder.

If cut it to size it should fit except for a few small assembly screw heads on the sides that you can mark and notch when you get them..

Just E-mail Grant, He'll tell you the size of the hole. I did, and he e-mailed right back.

"I was wondering if anyone knew what the rough opening size is for the 15" x 18" window that Grant sells on his site."

Hey, Mark!

Cut the opening 15-3/16" x 18-3/16". The mfg. has a 1/16" +/- tolerance, but from experiance, this is the best size opening to cut.

"Asianflava" is right - an e-mail to me gets a prompt response (usually). Though I've been sick all week and haven't been able to surf the 'Board much, I've kept up with the Li'l Bear e-mail and some of the teardrops.net e-mail. If Mike hadn't alerted me, I probably wouldn't have seen this thread 'til later this weekend ...

Good Luck on the project! In the meantime ...

Thanks Grant. I figured that you were busy during the day and didnt want to bother you that is why I decided to post the question on here. I knew that someone would know the answer. I hope that you are feeling better soon. I will be contacting next week to place my order.

Thanks,
Mark
