Installing saftey chains

What is the proper method to attach safety towing chains to the trailer? Are they bolted, looped, wrapped around the frame , etc? Is there supposed to be some movement/slippage allowed? Any pictures would be helpful.

If there is a "proper way", I probably did it wrong, but I used a couple of grade 8, 3/8" blots.

If you it wrong, so did I. I just ran the rear coupler bolt thru the chains.

I have a HF trailer and the instructions have you put a bolt through the ball hitch portion of the tongue and it just goes through a link of the chain in the middle.

FWIW,

I've typically had my chains welded to the tongue. One time they were welded to the outside, another time they were hidden in the inside of the coupler.

There you go, three differnt "proper"?, ways to install safety chains.

I think the "proper" in safety chains is first to have them and use them and have them securely attached to the trailer tongue/hitch.

So, now you say, define "securely".

However you attach the chains, just make sure they are securely attached to the trailer, bolted or welded will work. When attaching them to the car, they should be crossed underneath in case the hitch were to come off the ball, the chains will cradle the tongue of the trailer and hold it approximately in the middle of the tow vehicle. Just make sure they are the correct length and will not allow the tongue to get down onto the pavement. I've never needed them, but sure don't want to find out the hard way. Doug Hodder

Define " securely " ? How about bolted & welded? That should secure it! If that isn't enough , wrapped. looped,bolted & welded? Oh & crossed too! Seriously, I think bolted & welded would be more than enough.
