Roof Racks and Table Mounting Hardware

Postby Oldragbaggers » Tue May 22, 2012 6:56 pm

I want to put a roof rack on my tear for a couple of kayaks, and I would like to mount tables on both sides by the galley. I jumped on google thinking it would take me 5 or 10 minutes to locate and order my hardware.
WRONG!!!! :? I have literally been looking for days and have not been able to find exactly what I am looking for.

Years ago we had a Catalina 22 sailboat that had a little table mounted to the wall. It slid into a sort of t-track, was very easy to mount and remove, the track was really unobtrusive when the table wasn't mounted and it was rock solid. I cannot find this track on the internet ANYWHERE. I have googled every combination of words I can think of that might get me a result for that, but no luck. So.....(too late to make a long story short) if anyone of you knows what I'm talking about and where I might be able to get it, please let me know. And I would also like to know what hardware you are all using if you are not using that.

Now to the roof rack. What kind of base/feet do you all use for your roof racks. I assume it needs to be a flat, level base that just screws to the top of the teardrop and/or the edge. All of the base feet I find either fits into some kind of gutter on the vehicle, or hooks onto the top of the door frame, or the base is angled a bit to accomodate a slightly curved roof. A lot of the rack sites want to put you through an exercise of selecting your vehicle make and model so they can tell you what base you need. Haven't seen "teardrop trailer" on one single drop down.

Help me!! I'm usually pretty good at finding stuff, but I'm feeling really flummoxed right now.

You'll need something like this too.

And BTW, I have purchased from these people and have been satisfied.

Thanks, Cliff!

Those are the "Clip-on" type that require a short section of drip-rail called QuickRails (included with the set, BTW) for the towers to clamp on to ... they're great if you plan to remove the racks at any time. But, if you want something that is more permanent and less "gadget-ized", I have a set of short "towers" that bolt directly to the sidewall and down through the Roof Edge Molding that might work ... they'll mount almost anywhere on the curve of the side profile, but you need to be mindful of the roof clearance of anything you put on the racks. If you are interested, Becky, I can take a couple of pics and e-mail them to you (I've been needing to do that anyway and show them on my site ... ;) ...! I just haven't had the opportunity to mount them on a teardrop, yet).

Good luck, and as always ...

Roof Racks and Table Mounting Hardware

Postby crpngdth2001 » Wed May 23, 2012 12:32 pm

I've made several roof racks for a camper and a Jeep Wrangler hardtop using Ford Explorer roof racks. The rails mount right to a mostly flat surface, and have adjustable crossbars. They are dirt cheap at most pick-n-pull type auto scrapyards.

Here's an example on a Jeep hardtop. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/junkyard-roof-rack-630944/

Yakima makes plenty of accessories for the Explorer rack,as do many others. Should have no trouble finding kayak supports for it.

For anyone interested, here's a pic of the bolt-on "Tower" for the Roof Racks that I sell ... it's a quick mock-up on an unfinished tear, but you can get the general idea ...:

Interesting Grant. I wonder if it would mount correctly on my roof. I have a 1/2" radius on the edges because I am laying fiberglass cloth on the roof and overlapping it to the sides.

And if it would work, how much would 4 of these bad boys set me back??
