Bunk?

Hi,

Anyone put a bunk in a 5x8 in lieu of the inside shelving/cabinets? I don't see many....

If you did, do you have pictures, do's and don't's?

Thought I had a better picture, but here's my interior shelf/bunk. I built it this way for my (ex)girlfriend's son. The 2 rails are removable - they just lift out of place. There was a foam pad that was on the shelf when he slept up there. Now that the gf and her son are no longer in the picture, its a great place to put dufflebags and clothes. The end supports are just pieces of inside corner trim mitered to form a cup. The shelf itself is 3/4" plywood, which has a 1x2 running from side to side across the 5' wide cabin for support. It easily holds 150+lbs.

The lack of cabinets is a lot more versatile, allows for more gear/clothes, and also gives the cabin a more open feel. I'll never have interior cabinets in any teardrop I build. They look nice and pretty, but I feel they add weight and take up space. Just my opinion though.

Great, thanks for the photo and info! Yes, we were not sure how the bunk would turn out...and what our plan will be. I was thinking of 2x2 across the front for support but wow, even 1x2 works, eh? Very nice. Thanks for replying and posting the pic! We'll keep you posted on how things progress. I only have my chassis so far...still researching before we start the build.

Well, It is an oak 1x2, which is a bit harder and stronger than pine. But a 2x2 would probably work too.

I built an extra big shelf I accommodate my 6 yo twins. Hope you can see it from this pic.

I installed a lip on the edge to keep them from rolling off onto me.

I am considering this option as well for my next build. Lightweight and tons of storage potential. Thanks for the pictures!

No more interior cabinets for me on build #2. Instead I do the shelf/bunk thing plus 2 doors and a minimum of 5 foot wide. no more tiny tiny 4 foot widers.

Maybe for more space when not being used, you can get them hammock kits for VW vans that are poles attached via brackets when needed? I had one in my old T25 camper

This one (Megadrop) is not a teardrop but rather, a ttt with a lifting roof; but, in this picture, you can kind of see how these bunks were done:

There are bunks out there. You just have to do a few searches to see them.

Just made a rough sketch of my 5x 10 with a double bunk thought it might be appropriate for this thread. The bunks will be about 28 in wide and the length of the trailer (5 ft minus walls about 4 in for walls) so I can drop some old crib mattresses in them (27x52). Should be great for the little ones until they get not so little.
