Depth of subfloor on a TD build

Postby western traveler » Thu Mar 04, 2021 12:20 pm

I am not building an off-road TD but want to be able to cross a dry wash or small swale if necessary even a bit of water heading into camp.
What is a safe distance from the ground for a storage compartment to extend below the frame in front of the axle? My first thought is no lower than the axle extends but I am concerned with uneven ground. Should it be higher than that?
I am planning on 15” wheels and a Dexter torflex axle on a 10’ build.

I considered putting the battery below the floor --near the axle-- with this last build. But sooner or later...

I hate the off-road word. It means a lotta different things to people. Off the highway? Or on a BLM two-track? We don't do what I would call "off-roading". We're always on some kind of road.

This is one of our favorite campsites that we've visited several times.

It's 100 yards off a maintained BLM road... I'm not sure we could get to it if we didn't have the clearance we do.

:frightened:

Yes, like that! My guess is we see similar terrain. Lots of spots just off the highway or down that 2 track a few miles. Lots of BLM land. We drove hundreds of miles of roads through it last year from our base camps. I am willing to be inconvenienced by a bit higher ground clearance of my build rather than not being able to leave the pavement but want the classic Benroy look.

Hmm, Just what would happen if a sealed AGM battery took a bath? I'd be shocked if its all that serious.

And since I did put mine behind the axle, someday I may be...

It should be fine. It’s a rock or stump that I was concerned about.
