We've exceeded our bandwidth

Postby mikeschn » Thu Aug 10, 2006 8:17 pm

I got the shocking news a couple days ago.

You guys like this site so much that we've exeeded the allowed bandwidth for a shared server. :o

So they've asked us to go to a dedicated server.

So I asked how much that would cost...

We've reached a compromise, and we are going to switch over to a semi dedicated server.

That'll give us more bandwidth, more storage space, more of everything we like... We'll make the change sometime next week probably... As far as I know the transition should be transparent to us, but I'll keep you informed.

Enjoy!

You forgot the bottom line. So what's it going to cost us? Do you have an idea?

Have a good day.

Gage that's what I was wondering also, don't really care just want to kick in. I wondered how long it would be till it came to that, it usually happens eventually. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Might be time to shop for a new host provider.... There is a awsome amount of bandwidth available for less than $10 a month by many hosting services... It may be more of a "provider" issue than a bandwith issue....

Maybe its time to go shopping for better priced/bandwidth hosting service...

Chell straightened me out. Apparently they said I am a resource hog. Apparently I am using almost 25% of a server that is supposed to be shared with 200 other people. It isn't a bandwidth problem.

Anyways, going to a semi dedicated server I'll be sharing with 15 to 20 people, instead of 200 people. Honestly I don't see how that is truely going to fix it, if I am already using 25% of a server. But we'll try it.

It's gonna cost $65 a month. The donations will cover that for a little while.

Mike,
do we need to remove some of our old photos?
Or any real old posts or anything?

Would that help?

Hey, Y'all -

Can anybody tell me why some posts are completely contained on my screen, and for others I have to slide the whole screen to the right in order to read the last few words of each sentence? Very occasionally, I have to scroll way across, as one sentence takes up about three screens in width. Whassup?

It is usually because there is a large picture posted within the thread. Some people will complain about it an be quick to tell you to resize the pic when this happens.

It also depends on how your screen is setup. For example, if someone posted a pic say, 700pixels wide. People who have bigger screens may not have to scroll while others with smaller screens will. The generally accepted picture size is 640X480

The other major culprit of that is posting links in a thread. They want to be one string so unless you use the url tags it stretches waaaay across the page. Usually makes it even wider than pictures do.

Yup servers/bandwidth do cost $$$'s! I'm paying almost 10X that for our dedicated server.. luckily we use it for business mainly, but I do run a forum that uses substantial resources and generates $0. This is a problem

From my experience, I can imagine the resources T&TTT are using up. Especially an issue with so much threads and oodles of people browsing at once.

Maybe we should all get out camping more and ease up on the server!

Great idea, Dave - except there seems to be a bunch of folks on this list who take their laptops along and post from camp!
