SOPA and PIPA postponed indefinitely after protests

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- When the entire Internet gets angry, Congress takes notice. Both the House and the Senate on Friday backed away from a pair of controversial anti-piracy bills, tossing them into limbo and throwing doubt on their future viability.

And the day after, the Department of Justice, shut down megauploads.com and it's affiliate websites. The lie we were being told was that SOPA and PIPA were needed in order to shut down these sites. What SOPA and PIPA really did, was give the recording and movie industry, the power to have the DOJ shut down sites without due process.

This is a huge victory, but the bills should never have been written in the first place. Just another example of what money can buy. Our government is so corrupt. Our founding fathers are all rolling in their graves at the mess we have become.

My bet they are already being rewritten.
I have no difficulty in protecting intellectual property and have been very careful to follow fair use on both my web sites. In one instance I was threatened with legal action because I quoted materiel from a repartive therapist (it is neither) and I said I had consulted with the legal department at the University of Toledo and studied legal guide lines so feel free. Did not hear back.

There are lottsa issues that need to be sorted out. The issue of "internet neutrality" is, IMHO, really two separate issues. The first is the deliberate steering of traffic to specific sites while ignoring other sites that should be included in search results. The second is the issue of bandwidth usage. Why should someone downloading a few pages a day pay just as much as a user using a thousand times the bandwidth. This has been addressed, as I understand it, in the mobile arena but not in the land bases systems of internet access.

Although I understand some of the concerns regarding the currently proposed legislation, I haven't seen anyone stating exactly how the current situation should be modified.

I do agree with the US getting Megauploads off the air as it was clearly a vehicle for the illegal sharing of copywrite protected material. If one reads the indictment there is only one reasonable conclusion.

The opinions in this post are my own. My comments are directed to those that might like an alternative approach to those already espoused. There is the right way,the wrong way,the USMC way, your way, my way, and the highway.

I read the indictment too, and they are definitely getting what they deserve. I've also read some addition articles, relating how brazen they were about flaunting the wealth they were amassing.

There was a small percentage of their users that were not in the business of distributing copyrighted material however, and now they also have been punished.

Many people are confusing this issue with the issue of free speech, and indeed, the internet as a medium of information exchange makes the whole issue intensely complex.

The RIAA and MPAA really need to rethink their 1940's marketing strategies.

I think for the first time in history the majority want their own congress critter out of office. I for one would like to see strict limits on how much can be spent on campaigns with no corporate or PAC money.
I would also wish that all advertising be truth tested.

I vote. Unfortunately, because of the political demographics of where I live my vote amounts to a ball of spit in the wind.

I think this was a good example of getting the word out and actually letting our Representatives know how we feel.

I paid $35 to Robo Dial everyone involved in these and felt it was money well spent.
