aluminum base

Postby cpowell243 » Sat Nov 15, 2014 8:49 pm

Has anyone spent the extra money to use an aluminum utility trailer as a base for a 5X10 TD? Costs more but wouldn't weight difference be significant? (And come in 5X10 for full support of floor (?)

The 'base' isn't a big percentage of the total weight of a trailer so using aluminium doesn't make that much difference. If you want a lighter trailer, built the body lighter.

Thanks - I''ll stick with steel. Would like to have a 5X10 base for full support of floor - can the Northern Tool 5X8 be stretched out by placing the folding rails on the inside of the side rails and extending out 2 feet? Other options?

I just bought a 7x14 aluminum trailer, just for the weight savings. It weighs 400 pounds as compare to the 6'10" x 18 foot steel trailer I sold that weighed 2000 lbs. :)

How very true, but we tend to overlook the prospect of corrosion in aluminum and in addition,
the fatigue factor in aluminium is higher than steel. If we want to go the Geek route on this lightness
lets not overlook Titanium, and bugger the expense! How cool would the bragging rights be there?!

There is aluminum and there is aluminum, witness aluminum boats. We have not had any problems with our all aluminum frame trailer which is now six years old. Fasteners are either SS or anodized and I used PTFE paste which supposedly helps. I do a yearly inspection looking for cracks and corrosion. And we had the tongue reinforced.
