I have had several sites require that I read and accept their new "terms of service" for compliance with the new euro privacy laws - an America gardening site? A Mexican cooking blog? Really?

I remember when health care compliance laws came out, working in IT and was told we need to start complying with the privacy laws. Really? We weren't? We don't protect patient's information? Why do we need laws like this when it should be a given.

The interwebs have no borders.

Europe is setting a great example, good start on privacy anyway, wish all would follow.

Many firms would only pay for lip service, takes enforcement with real teeth for most to make the necessary investment, this stuff's real hard.

It is called a "slippery slope". Many laws or actions may seem good on the surface, but future events often prove these very wrong.

This whole FOSTA/GDPA has gone wack.
OK, my weather app has new TOS to comply, Europeans look at US weather so ok.
My Bible app has new TOS, why? What data were they collecting?
US newspapers are locking access from EU countries because they don't want to comply with their privacy laws. What data are they collecting? Blocking the flow of news was not the intent of privacy laws.

I was a spook in the army and I know what information we could collect in the vacuum tube era so I have always tried to keep a low key approach to my PII but I fear the cat's out of the bag.

That's one thing I have to agree on as well. Getting into a seriously slippery slope.

As said centuries ago when this country was formed:

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Abraham Lincoln

Sadly he basically predicted the downfall of our country. Not because of the government, but because we the people are letting it happen because people as a whole are basically stupid. Dave's quote above explains how and why it happens. Because people don't care until it effects them.

United we stand, divided we fall. Government has been able to divide us because the government has not represented the people for decades. It is ran by corporations. The few that try to take a stand are kept in check so we do not become united this being able to put a stop to what is happening.

The stupidest part, history has PROVEN that this course of action ALWAYS FAILS. Population reached a breaking point, becomes united for one common purpose. They never seem to learn from past mistakes due to arrogance. Sadly it's either my children or grandchildren (my children are still very young so the second part is many years off yet) that will likely see the collapse of what we know now.

If you are not paying a subscription for a service, **you** are the product.

Stop expecting stuff to be free on the internet **and** having any semblance of privacy.

I don't expect anything free on the internet, that's what adds are for. I also don't expect companies to log *every* move on the internet, pilfer my phone for data and then keep everything insecurely so hackers get it. And without telling me they are doing it or asking for permission. :x
The only reason it is still legal here is because people don't realize it's happening and the companies that are doing it are the richest in the world (meaning they've bought our politicians).

Most who do realize just don't care, gave up any expectation of any privacy long ago

I keep trying to keep my stuff safe but you're right, I'm getting to the point where I don't care either...

Of all the forums, blogs, aggregators, vlogs and Facebooks I follow this is the only one that made any perceptible changes over FOSTA.

Think the EU is trying to kill the internet:
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20180 ... pped.shtml

tl;dr
"...the Directive, but it actually makes many of the problems worse -- including saying that online platforms become legally responsible for any copyright infringement on their platforms. This new text effectively says that the internet should only be a broadcast medium, and no longer allow for open user platforms."

"Online content sharing service providers perform an act of communication to the public and therefore are responsible for their content. As a consequence, they should conclude fair and appropriate licensing agreements with rightholders. Therefore they cannot benefit from the liability exemption provided..."

"even if any reading of the directive would mean it absolutely must apply to most links -- especially any that use any sort of descriptive text. On top of that if you share a link on a platform like Twitter or Facebook that automatically sucks in some snippet text, you're now violating the law as well."

Added to the list of reasons not to join the EU.
