Dang Larry,
I think you got a winner, if George lets his kids have any say.

hello everyone,
i just realized there was a page 2,
thanks for the suggestions for a name,
my wife likes "fish story"
the woodwork was the easy part,
the initial design (shape) was the hard part,
i drew dozens of times before i got the caricature shape i wanted,
as far as the exterior (possibly paint) i dont know yet,
i really want to cover with something, (suggestions ?)
since im covering 11' long (including the fins) by 8' tall
i have a large area to cover, i have been thinking about covering with license plates (auto) i know it sounds crazy, but so does a fish camper,
anyone care to comment on this idea? anyone want to send me plates?
btw, im claiming to have built the first ever in history "fish camper"
anyone out there know of another one?
almost forgot, im trying to locate bubble windows for the "eye windows"
i believe i cut the holes 16" but can change the size a little if need be,
any and all assistance and or advice appreciated,

george

Overlap them and they would be like fish scales! I have some South Dakota plates I could donate to the cause. My folks live in Hendersonville, I could bring them down when I visit this spring if you don't want them real soon (besides, I would love to see the fish in person!).

I seem to recall seeing some round bubble type skylights at the local lumber yard, will check next time I am there, they would probably work as windows, but I don't know how expensive they would be. I think they make some round bubble type windows for pick-up toppers too. Wouldn't stick out very far, but would be better than flat.

For realistic fish 'scales', how about using CDs? They'd be tedious to put on, but would look good.

George, You may have overlooked something.
It may be too tall to get it out of the building!

AOL sends out so many of them, finding enough wouldn't be hard. They would be HEAVY though.

So would the license plates. I think the CD's would be lighter, and look more like scales, but how would you attach them? Lots of silicone sealer?

covering the exterior

Postby waywardson » Thu Feb 03, 2005 11:14 am

hello everyone,
im not really looking for a scale look, but i would overlap & silicone the license plates to seal. i am looking more for a cheap & unique look,
the cds would look good and are a possibility but it would take a "bunch" of them to cover the sides. about 12 pcs. per sq. ft. or around 800 cds,
i dont know if i could collect that many, i would also have to cut them to fit the curves, i think i still like the license plates, i could use a combination of states, age, ect. ive never seen anything like that before,
plus, being metal they would last forever, and only look better with age,
btw, im not thinking about painting them, but to leave as they are,
i am also in need of a supplier of trim (that must be bendable) to cover where the sides (unknown material) and the metal top meet.

i looked again last night for another fish camper, i think i may have the first one, anyone heard of any others?

thanks,

george

i did purchase the 1964 trotwood camper, have to drive to west va to pick up, one owner, never remodeled, minor water damage 1 corner, 700.00 plus fuel up & back, looks like a road trip,

btw, i also have a 1963 glasspar seafair sedan, (18'cuddy cabin cruiser) a 1983 amc eagle wagon, on demand 4 wheel drive (one previous owner 60 thousand miles, all original except for trailer hitch) a 1974 bradley gt (remember those?) a 1983 chevy shortbed, (purchased new, over 300 thousand on it) a 1964 glasspar runabout that i hope to invert and use for a camper roof, a 1976 jeep waggoneer that i will be pulling something with, anyone out there with similar interests, my wife says im strange,

George,
I see that the new types of tunnel skylights now available use a round dome on the exterior lite. You should be able to order the replacement lens and not have to buy the entire package. I would recommend getting the replacement lens made of polycarbonate instead of acylic. (I'm sure that at least a few of these companies offer that option for applications in hazardous or high impact locations) Sorry I don't have more detailed info for you, I don't carry this type of skylight, I'm more into commercial grade skylights. I do have access to a company that does heat/vacuum forming with plastics and polycarbonate, but the cost would put a pinch in your pocket book. :(

BTW-Your wife has good taste with the name she likes. ;)
