In Memory of "Dawg" 1990 - 2005

Postby Kevin A » Sun Sep 18, 2005 9:47 pm

As some of you know from the Redwoods Revisited gathering this weekend, I had to put my camping buddy down due to a lengthy illness.
She entered my life as an abandoned 3 month old puppy on Sept. 15th 1990, and departed on Sept. 15th 2005. I never realized just how much one can become attached to a dog until I faced the loss of Heidi ("Dawg"), it's been a tough week that became much easier to deal with by spending the weekend with some of the greatest friends anyone could ask for.
I want to thank each and everyone one of you from the redwoods gathering for being the great group of people that you are.

Kevin,

This must be an incredibly difficult time for you. I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.

Kev,
That's a real nice shot of her.
That was a pretty cool way how she came to be your owner.
Time will heal your loss and knowing that she is no longer suffering will help comfort your pain.
As time goes on, you will remember those special times you had with her and that will make the heart grow warm.

Kevin,
I can't come up with any words. I shed a lot of tears when my companion of 20 years reached the end of her life. I know you have too.

The dog letter

Postby vinoscooter » Sun Sep 18, 2005 10:49 pm

If you can start the day without caffeine.
If you can keep going without pep pills.
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches & pains.
If you can resist complaining & boreing with your troubles.
If you can eat the same food every day & be grateful for it.
If you can understand when your loved ones, are to busy to give
You any time
If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault
of yours, something goes wrong.
If you can take criticism & blame without resentment.
If you can ignore a friend's limited education & never correct him.
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend.
If you can face the world without lies & decit.
If you can conquer ' tension without medical help.
If you can relax without liquor.
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs.
If you can say honestly that deep in your heart, you have no prejudice.
against creed, color, religion or politics.
THEN, MY FRIEND, YOU ARE ALLMOST AS GOOD AS YOUR DOG.

I don't know who the writer is... Im sorry about your loss..

Looks like she was a terrific friend. I had to do that a a few years back. The new dawg was not a replacement, but a new buddy that I love also. Each has their own traits, just like children, and you grow to love each dog in a different way for different things.

Hope that makes sense.

Kevin, being a dog lover myself, I know how you feel and you’ve got my sympathy. To say that dogs are man’s best friend is almost an understatement. The relationship we share with a good dog is special way beyond friendship.

Two years ago we had to say good bye to Drifter, our last best friend and I cried like a baby. We knew he was getting bad so Drifter and I went to the kennel together and picked out a pup, Murphy the dog we have now. I know I’m setting myself up for another grief when Murf passes but sharing life with him is still worth it.

Kevin-
I did not realize you were experiencing that loss while with us in the Redwoods. :( Heidi sounds like a wonderful companion. Our thoughts are with you.

An animal lover once said: "If you believe in heaven then it has to be a place where, when you get there all your former pets come running up to greet you."

If it is not like that, then I'm not interested. I'm sorry for your loss.

Tough now, but the memories will linger and the pain will lessen. As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate the companionship of our 4 legged friends even more..

I believe my 5 year old said it best when my neighbors dog died "All dogs go to heaven so you'll see her again" He then went on to tell our neighbor that she was old and would probably see her soon. so good and bad there I guess. Very sorry about your loss.

Hey Kevin,

I'm sorry to hear about your dog.

I know how you feel. We lost our 16-year-old beagle back in November. My wife and I cried like babies.
